The Curse of Felix Unger

The Curse of Felix Unger

The daily papers reported this week that summer youth jobs were going to be cut from 50,000 to 21,000 this year. The announcement was made by Commissioner Betty Wu of the city's Department of Employment at a hearing on the budget. Many City Council members did not take the news well, and they predicted that the cuts would be extremely detrimental to the youth and to New York City. We could not agree more. These cuts will diminish the hopes and dreams of many kids in New York City, especially in the Rockaways, and their frustration will manifest in a number of ways. In the show, "The Odd Couple", every time Felix said, "Let it be on your head," something terrible would befall Oscar. We are going to play Felix by stating the following to the bureaucrats. When the city's police precincts start to swell to capacity with young people, let it be on your head. When people are robbed, beaten or killed at an alarming rate by angry, neglected and disgruntled youth, let it be on your head. If the victims of the rage turn out to be your father, mother, brother, son or daughter, (Mr. or Mrs. Bureaucrat), let it be on your head. If you kill the spirit of every kid in New York City, who wants to make an honest living and pursue career opportunitiesâ026 let it be on your head.
