Rockaway Artists Alliance
By Susan Hartenstein

Can’t wait til Art Frenzy is here? Counting the days until June 8 and 9, when Queens’ best arts event fills Fort Tilden? Well, you can begin celebrating it on Memorial Day weekend. RAA’s exhibitions for Art Frenzy start on May 25 and run through June 23 in sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 at the Rockaway Arts Center in Fort Tilden. Gallery hours are Saturday, 12-5 pm and Sunday 1-4 pm. Outdoor sculpture may be enjoyed from dawn to dusk. Artists have gathered from as far away as upstate New York and as near as Far Rockaway.

Sculpture Peter Lundberg from Connecticut was attracted to this unique seaside urban park to create a monumental sculpture at Riis Landing. More about Mr. Lundberg in a later issue of this column. So come out on this beautiful weekend to enjoy the Frenzy even before the Frenzy.

Queens Council on the Arts, an organization that supports and promotes the arts from all over our borough, is presenting the weekend celebration in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area, Friends of Gateway and local Rockaway arts organizations – Rockaway Artists Alliance, Rockaway Theatre Company and Rockaway Music and Arts Council. Reflecting this broad base, artists from all over Queens and beyond, including from Rockaway, will present arts of all kinds in the park. Music, dance, theater, spoken word, visual arts and more will be enjoyed in various venues in Fort Tilden. Following is just a taste of some of the performances and events of June 8 and 9 taking place at one of these venues. RAA shares its Rockaway Moon outdoor stage with a wondrous variety of artists. At 5:30 pm on Saturday, the Rockaway Theatre Company presents scenes and songs from last season’s popular productions. Also on that day at 1 pm is Open Mic "Jr.," welcoming original poetry readings by children 8-16 years old. It will feature magician/poet John Bellon. On Sunday at 2:30 pm, Quintet of the Americas performs music from this hemisphere, including the music of Bolivia. Behind sTudio 7, master craftsman Patrick Clark will give a stained glass demonstration from 11 am – 5 pm on Saturday, June 8. A teen mosaic workshop given by Anne Hourigan runs Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 pm. These are only a few of the "frenzy" of events presented during "Frenzy" weekend. Watch for more info in the coming weeks.

The Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) and the Brooklyn Watercolor Society (BWS) are holding a free outdoor "paint-out"/workshop on Saturday, June 15 (rain date: June 22) in Fort Tilden. The group will meet at 11 am in sTudio 6, Fort Tilden. Some watercolor experience is preferred, but not necessary. Open to RAA and BWS members only. Please supply your own materials. The best of the results will be part of RAA’s ARTSPLASH 2002 exhibition in October. Do not be intimidated. Participants do not have to complete a painting during the session. You are welcome even if you wish to bring a sketchpad and/or camera and paint your masterpiece later. Come and enjoy the camaraderie, the shared knowledge, the beautiful scenery and the pleasures of this thrilling medium. Please contact the RAA office if you wish to participate. RAA’s email is at: rockArt116@aol.com.

Speaking of a thrilling medium, Madam Rayah (you knew I couldn’t pass that up) has divined the two films to be shown for this year’s "Movies by Moonlight." For the 3rd year in a row, RAA’s outdoor movie weekend is a winner. On Friday, June 21: "Some Like It Hot!" On Saturday, June 22: "The Wizard of Oz." Short films precede each movie. Each night starts at 8:45 pm. Thanks to Blockbuster Video for their generous contribution to help organize and present "Movies by Moonlight." Watch this column for the latest "M x M" developments, straight from the Happy Medium herself.

The free 4-week hand-painting furniture course being offered by Michael Redpath in June is full. But Redpath will offer another 4-week course in July. Materials are not included. The class runs 6:30-8:30 pm. Day of the week to be determined. Watch this column for further information.

Don’t miss "Lend Me a Tenor." Directed by Peggy Page, this hilarious hit comedy is the opening production this season of the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC). Performances at the Post Theatre in Fort Tilden are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, May 31-June 22: two Sunday matinees at 2 pm, June 9 and 16. Contact RTC for ticket information. I know I’ll try to get the best seat I can.

Have a safe and healthy weekend. Come spend some of it at the Fort.
