Beware of Mail Crooks!

Beware of Mail Crooks!

According to Crime Prevention Officers, P.O. Brian McCabe from the 100 precinct and P.O. Mike Valentino from the 101 precinct, larcenies from residential mailboxes are occurring. This has been recently reported on the local news channels.

According to the postmaster, perpetrators will go to a local supermarket and take a pile of circulars to deliver around the area to residential homes. The perpetrator will open the owner’s mailbox and look through the mail, taking envelopes that contain bank statements, credit cards, and convenience checks. The perpetrator will then put the circular with the remaining mail back in the mailbox and move on to the next house. Usually only one or two pieces of mail are taken from a residence, therefore the theft may go undetected for days or even weeks by which time the perpetrator is long gone and the damage is already done.

Incidents have been reported in the five boroughs as well as in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Over 30 arrests have been made regarding thefts from mailboxes. The perpetrators have been described as male whites, primarily of eastern European descent. They usually walk through a neighborhood alone or they may be dropped off on one block and picked up at another. They will walk up to the resident’s home and place a circular inside the mailbox. This is against the law.

If you notice activity like this on your block or in your neighborhood, call 911 and give the operator a detailed description of the suspicious individual or individuals. If you have any further questions, you may contact the Postmaster at (718) 321-5600. You may also contact your local precinct crime prevention officer.
