Art Frenzy June 8 And 9

Art Frenzy June 8 And 9

The Rockaway Artists Alliance, Inc. (RAA), in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area (GNRA), is hosting multimedia events as part of the Queens Council on the Arts second annual Art Frenzy festival. The weekend festival takes place June 8 and 9 in the Rockaway Arts Center, Fort Tilden, GNRA. RAA’s Art Frenzy exhibitions run from May 25 through June 23. Jurors of these exhibitions are Valerie Smith, Director of Exhibitions for the Queens Museum of Art, and Robyn Love, Gallery Curator for Queens Theatre in the Park.

This important arts festival will build upon the success of the first ArtFrenzy, which was held in May of last year. That event celebrated the art and culture of Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside, as this will celebrate the art and culture of Rockaway.

This year’s festival at Gateway will allow visitors to enjoy not only the event itself, but the area’s beaches and the nearby wildlife preserve.

Performing arts co-curators are Sandra Overstreet of The Little Globe Theater and Irene Mallinger, producer and director of the Jackson Heights Poets. Visual, performing and literary artists are participating. RAA’s sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 Galleries, outdoor stage, Sculpture Garden and the surrounding park will feature sculpture, painting, photography, dance, yoga, poetry, fine crafts, music and performance. "The Children’s Parade" will feature sea creature costumes created by the participants. Performing artist participants will form the framework of special events, both indoor and outdoor.

During the Art Frenzy weekend, artists will open their Fort Tilden studios for tours by the public. The weekend will also feature the Tugboat Film and Video Series. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the "Rockaway Moon" outdoor stage is on Sunday, June 9, 1 p.m. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall is scheduled to cut the ribbon.
