No Evidence of Racism

No Evidence of Racism

Dear Editor;

I am writing to the specific charge that Bernard Gassaway, Beach Channel High School principal, "is trying to get rid of all the White, Jewish teachers," contained in Howard Schwach's From The Editor's Desk (April 27).

As the current duly elected United Federation of Teachers Chapter Leader for the over 200 staff members in the building, and as a math teacher who is "White, Jewish" (and a member of my temple's executive board), I can categorically state that I have never seen any evidence of any anti-Semitism or racism on the part of the principal.

The cavalier use of such language not only damages this school and this community, but also diminishes the meaning of such a charge. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the other charges contained in the article due to the confidential nature of the situation.
