The first round playoffs of the Millennium tournament took place on Wednesday, March 13, 2002. The first game played was in the 14-16 year old division. Expansion won over Arverne, 59-34. The Expansion had three players with double figures with Shanel Joseph leading the team with 13 points, Arverne's Sean Wilson led his team with 15 points.
Lil Shane won the second game over Sorrentino 52-39. The game was close for four periods. In the fourth quarter, Sorrentino was outscored 22 to 12 to lose the game. The leading scorers for Lil Shane were Henry Polanco with 16 points and Lamarr Wilson and Mathew Hines both chipped in with 10 points. Sorrentino was led in scoring by Calvin Brown.
The 11-13 division mirrored the 14-16 division with Lil Shane winning over Arverne 41-35. Lil Shane once again played a competitive game. Expansion won the second game by the score of 57-34 over Sorrentino. In the 8-10 year old division, Sorrentino (20) won over Orange Crush (0). The second 8-10 year old game was a forfeit by Franchise, which meant that Sorrentino would play Lil Shane in the championships.
Championship week was fast and furious with Lil Shane beating Expansion by 14 points in the 8-10 year old division. The championship for the 14-16 division was won by Lil Shane narrowly beating Expansion 62-58. Lil Shane headed on to the playoffs for the borough championship at Roy Wilkins Recreation Center, which was played on March 25. For the 11-13 year old division, Expansion got the championship win over Lil Shane, 52-37 and also played at the borough championships at Roy Wilkins Recreation Center.
In all of the years that Sorrentino has hosted this mid winter basketball tournament, this is the first year that our organization has played in all three divisional championships. The 8-10 year old division championships were a repeat of Sorrentino's last meeting with Lil Shane, with Sorrentino pulling off the victory, 25-22. Once again the first half of play and balanced team effort was the difference for Sorrentino.
Top scores for Lil Shane was S. Todd with 6 points and C. Hampton also chipped in with 5 points. D. Edwards, G. Alexander and T. Crawford led Sorrentino with 6 points each. P. Robinson scored her first 2 points for Sorrentino after participating in a Double Dutch Tournament earlier that morning. Sorrentino went on to play the winner of the March 30, 2002 game between Lost Battallion Hall and Roy Wilkins. On March 25, 2002 Expansion (11-13 division) and Lil Shane (14-16 division) lost in the first round of the borough playoffs.
