Colin Powell: Mid-East Scapegoat

Colin Powell: Mid-East Scapegoat

The Israeli/Palestinian killings have reached epidemic proportions, and the intense hatred on both sides is likely to initiate a full-scale war with nuclear implications. What is making the situation even more volatile is the fact that the United States is issuing "warnings" to Israel and the Palestinians, with regard to handling terrorism, while it engages in similar acts to thwart terrorists. At this point, neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians are concerned about U.S. involvement. Too much blood has been shed, and the death and destruction will continue. You cannot negotiate with people who are willing to die as martyrs. You cannot negotiate with extremists who are dedicated to the annihilation of a certain group of people. Secretary of State Powell's venture is the equivalent of placing a band-aid on a twelve-gauge shotgun wound. It is an attempt to do something, anything, but ultimately it will fail. The Bush Administration has placed him in a no-win situation by having him act as a broker for peace in the Middle East. Bush gets points for trying to deal with the conflict, but in the end Powell will become a symbol of the Bush Administration's failure.
