Clemence Mary Allen
Nurse

Clemence Mary Allen, born in Montserrat, West Indies, was a long time resident of Far Rockaway. She died on March 16, 2002 at the age of 70.

Clemence worked as a registered nurse for the New York City department of Health.

She is survived by her sons, John Allen and Larry Allen; brothers John Allen and Peter Allen; sisters Margaret Ryner, Mary Tonge, Agnes Browne and Sarah Wilson; many nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Interment was held under the direction of The Meserola Funeral Home, Inc., in Inwood, New York.

Daniel J. Boyle Sr.
Elevator Operator

Daniel J. Boyle Sr., born in Manhattan, was a resident of Rockaway Park for 35 years, coming from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He died on April 5, 2002.

Daniel worked as an elevator operator and was a member of 32B-32J Local SEIU. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He attended St. Camillus Church.

Daniel is preceded in death by his wife Claire (Nee Byrne) Boyle.

He is survived by his son Daniel J. Boyle Jr.; daughters Patricia Boyle, Catherine Stephens and Claire Broslaw; grandchildren Sara, Conor, Cassidy, Ryan and Erin.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home, Inc. was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Graciela Cruz
Homemaker

Graciela Cruz, born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, was a resident of the Rockaway community. She died on April 4, 2002.

She is preceded in death by her brother Porfirio Scharbaii; and her sisters, Edna Rivera and AnnaMaria Rodriguez.

She is survived by her husband, Julio Cruz; daughter, Mirna Bermudez; sons Julio Cruz Jr. and Melvin Cruz; brother, Ramon Scharbaii; sister Manuela Daalling; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Evergreen Cemetery.

Joseph Gentles
Foreman

Joseph Gentles, born in Old Harbor, St. Catherine, Jamaica West Indies, was a resident of the Rockaway community. He died on March 27, 2002 at the age of 72.

Joseph worked as a foreman for most of his life with the Alcan Bauxite Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rebecca Gentiles.

He is survived by his daughter Donna Gentiles-Passmore; sisters Mavis Winsome and Ena; brother Beresford; a grandson and host of other relatives.

Interment was held under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home Inc. at Pinelawn Cemetery.

Mary Anne Gibbons
Summer Resident

Mary Anne Gibbons, born in County Galway, Ireland, was a long time summer resident of the Rockaways. She died on March 22, 2002 at the age of 92.

Mary Anne was a member of the staff of P.S. 151 in Manhattan for 32 years and a member of the Galway Association of New York. She spent 40 years as a summer resident of the Rockaways.

She was in preceded in death by her husband John and her daughter Anne Gavin.

She is survived by her son James; her daughters Mary Pat and Kathleen; daughter-in-law Patricia; sons-in-laws John and Timothy; grandchildren Mary Kay Gibbons, James Gibbons, Sean Gavin, Ryan Pickering and Kieran Pickering.

Interment was held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.

Evelyn W. Greenblatt
Beloved Mother

Evelyn W. Greenblatt, born in Russia, was a Rockaway resident for 55 years. She died on April 4, 2002 at the age of 83.

Evelyn was a member of Young Israel Temple Cancer Care.

She was preceded in death by her husband Manny Greenblatt; parents Morris and Anna Weiner; brothers Issac and Willie Weiner;

She is survived by her children Al and Harriet Finger; Shirlee and Burt Tunick; Phil and Maggie Greenblatt; Eileen and Gary Zakarin; Mitch Greenblatt; Shar and Fred Roberts; grandchildren Rachelle, Zac, Heah, Meryl, Brian, Michael, Jesse, Nichola, Sebastian and Brianna; and 7 great-grandchildren;

Interment was held at New Montifele Cemetery.

George Johnson
Construction Worker

George Johnson, born in Amityville South Carolina, was a 50-year resident of the Rockaways. He died on March 2, 2002.

George was preceded in death by his daughter Ruth; sisters Sarah and Louise; brothers Emmett, Junior and J.P.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Jackson; sons- Vernon, Vincent, Carl and Larry; daughter Madeline; sister Mary Johnson and a host of other relatives.

Interment was held under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home Inc. at Forest Park Cemetery.

Dorothy Monte
Secretary

Dorothy Monte, born in Brooklyn, was a resident of Breezy Point for 33 years. She died on April 5, 2002.

Dorothy worked as a secretary for the American Journal of Nursing. She attended St. Thomas More Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Monte.

She is survived by her daughter Deborah Fraumeni; son Joseph Monte; sister Frances Sullivan and 2 grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Charles Henry Reeves
Postal Employee

Charles Henry Reeves, born in Brunswick County, Virginia, was a resident of the Rockaway community. He died on March 26, 2002.

Charles was a postal employee and was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

He is survived by his wife Janet; son Charles Reeves Jr.; daughter Michelle Reeves-Currie; brother Grant Reeves; grandchildren Charles E. Reeves, Sandra and Kayla Currie; and a host of other nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Interment was held under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home Inc. at Calverton National Cemetery.

John A. Reis
Policeman

John A. Reis, born in Brooklyn, was a resident of the Broad Channel community for 80 tears. He died on March 9, 2002 at the age of 89.

John was a retired New York City Policeman. John was a parishioner of St. Virgilius Church.

He is survived in death by his wife Alvina (nee Rabuse); his children John Michael, Ronald and Mary O' Donnell; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Interment was held at St. Charles Cemetery.

Sydney Wander
Police Officer

Sydney Wander, "Babalou", born in Rockaway Beach, was a long time resident of the Rockaway community. He died on April 2, 2002 at the age of 77.

Sydney Wander was a graduate of Far Rockaway High School. He served as a member of the Navy. He was a policeman for the New York City Police Department. He became an operator of beauty parlors in Long Island.

Sydney was preceded in death by his son Randy and his brother Bernie.

He is survived by his wife Dahli; son Perry; brothers Aaron and Jack; sister Rose; granddaughter Melissa; in-laws Ruth, Angel, sonny, Ritchie, Anne, Johnny, Jean and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Interment was held at Calverton National Cemetery on April 5.

John B. Wood
Postal Worker

John B. Wood, born in Inwood, Long Island was a resident of Island Park. He died on March 24, 2002 at the age of 76.

John worked as a letter carrier for 35 years with the U.S. Postal Service and stationed at Broad Channel and Far Rockaway Postal Station. He was a member of the 101st Airborne of the U.S. Army in the European theatre of World War II. He was an avid amateur scratch golfer and a longtime usher at St. Mary's Parish.

He is survived by his brother Walter Wood; sisters Anne McCloskey and Grace Gibson; a host of many nieces and nephews.

Interment was held under the services of The Meserola Funeral Home, Inc. at Calverton National Cemetery.
