Local HS Students Honored At York
York College has announced the winners of its second annual Women's History Month essay contest for high school students, "A Woman I Know and Admire." An awards ceremony was held at York College on Wednesday evening, March 20, honoring the students, their families and teachers. This contest was open to students, male and female, enrolled in Queens high schools linked with York in the "College Now" program.
Yvonne Fulmore of Beach Channel High School won first prize. Second prize was awarded to Shawn Nanan of Richmond Hill High School, and Jamie Kuzmicki of Beach Channel High School earned third prize. Honorable mentions were awarded to Almira Amoroso and Risha Ramlal of John Adams High School, and Elido Jimeniz of Richmond Hill High School.
Yvonne Fulmore of Rockaway Beach, read her prize-winning essay, "Genuine Gentlewoman," describing her mother, who is an elementary school resource room teacher. Yvonne expressed admiration for her mother’s hard work and dedication to her family.
Assistant Principal John Marcus of Beach Channel High School attended the ceremony, along with English teacher Marjorie Damashek, the school’s contest coordinator. English teacher Eileen Hudon of Richmond Hill High School was present as well.
York College Provost Edward Weil, Vice President Cheryl Smith, Admissions Director Sally Nelson, and College Now Coordinator Lester Raphael were present to honor these students.
The essay contest is sponsored by the York College Women's Studies Program, Dr. Laura Fishman, Director.
