SFDS Girls Complete Successful Run

SFDS Girls Complete Successful Run

The St. Francis 8th Grade Girls Basketball team capped off another successful season and their grammar school CYO careers by capturing the CYO Sectional Championships.  They fell one game short in their quest for a record fourth straight CYO Diocesan Championship title by losing in the Diocesan semi-finals to the eventual champions from St. Joachims.

This was the team's first CYO loss in over 3 years.   The girls quickly rebounded from that loss to continue their reign as champions of the Peggy Boyle Tournament, which it has won every year the tournament has been held. Last year's title game against St. Adelbert's was one of the most exciting games ever played at this level.

Eight of the girls have been team members since the 3rd Grade and have developed into excellent basketball players.   Each of these girls played a crucial role in the success of the team over the past six years. The original team members are: Alex Biddescombe, Jill Brady, Mary Grace Brady, Erin Casey, Corinne Howley, Alyson Lee, Kristi Moore and Katie Pastina. Martina Featherston returned to the team this year while Maureen Carey and Mary Kate McMahon joined the team this year. Each of the three was instrumental in helping the team do so well this year.

This year, their participation in the Peggy Boyle tournament had special meaning as Peggy was the team's first coach back in the 3rd grade and the team was the last team Peggy was able to coach prior to her illness. The girls were determined to make sure that nothing would stand in the way of defending their championship title.

After the team defeated both St. Camillus and St. Thomas Aquinas in the opening rounds of the tournament, SFDS awaited the winner of a game between those two teams to see whom it would have to defeat in the Championship game.  St. Thomas advanced to the finals of the tournament but was unable to stop the championship run of the St. Francis girls.

Many of Peggy Boyle's family members attended the game and special awards were given to each of the players on the team in her memory. Best wishes to all of the girls in high school.
