M.S. 180 Grabs CSD-27 Basketball Championship

M.S. 180 Grabs CSD-27 Basketball Championship

By Greg Carter

The M.S. 180 boys and girls basketball teams won the first CSD-27 basketball championship last Monday by overwhelming the Boys and Girls team from M.S. 53. The M.S. 180 girls defeated M.S. 53, 15-5 and the M.S. 180 boys won 15-7.

Before I go into details, let me give thanks where it is due to a number of people. The community should thank The Wave for informing the peninsula regarding a few of our top student/athletes. Thank you Mrs. Locke, Elio, G-Man, Howie and everyone else, thanks. I also would like to inform everyone that most of our participants in this program would be going on to do bigger and better things.

I am happy to announce (Mrs. Fern Zagor at PRYSE will appreciate this) that Bernard Robinson, Director of the Sorrentino Center with the N.Y.C. Department of Parks, will be conducting and initiating a Rockaway girls All-Star team. The team is made up of the best middle school girls on the peninsula. Thanks Bernard.

It goes without saying that our program received outstanding assistance and professionalism each week from the Thomas C. Mason Community Center. In particular, Director Jill Moore and her staff were truly excellent

The season is over. Hopefully the powers to be at CSD 27 will initiate additional sports linkage programs in the near future. What vision of true college bowl student/athletes do our youth have to look at? You would be really surprised what a small program like this will evolve into. Again, thanks to Mr. Cota and Mr. Gridelli for your support. You guys were great!
