Parent Workshops Begin On March 30

The Women and Children Family Enterprise, Inc. is happy to announce that their Parent Training Institute is conducting parent workshops at the Edgemere Community from March 30 to May 4. Women and Children Family Enterprise, Inc. is a not-for-profit women controlled organization whose primary goal is to provide services and programs for women and their families to strengthen the family system and enhance the quality of life socially, educationally and culturally for women and children.

The purpose of these parent workshops is the help parents and guardians become more familiar with the elementary school curriculum and equip parents/guardians with strategies to help their children with homework and how to reinforce classroom instruction. Hands on manipulative materials such as charts, maps, calculators, etc. as well as samples of math and English Language Arts materials that are used in the schools will be utilized. Some of the workshop objectives include discussion of successful test taking strategies, overview of elementary school math and English Language Arts curricula and identification of the critical elements for good reading comprehension.

The Parent Training Institute was launched in the Hammel Housing Project on Saturday, January 26, 2002 with emphasis on Preparing Your Child for the 4th grade English Language Arts Exam. The parents were pleased and enlightened with the workshop and expressed a desire for future workshops.

Tanya Bryant and Deborah Hoyle O’Neil, NYS certified elementary school teachers are the workshop leaders. Tanya teaches 5th grade children at P.S. 64 in Ozone Park and Deborah teaches 4th grade children at P.S. 42 in Arverne. Both Tanya and Deborah are committed educators who have volunteered to work with parent partners to ensure that the children achieve higher academic performance on the challenging NYC and NYS promotional exams.
