Breezy Point Firemen fly to France as guests of Air France, French Tourist Board, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Rail Europe and Sofitel Hotels. Yes, Fire Chief Tom and wife, Eileen McDonald, his brother, Fire Chief, Henry and wife, Cathy McDonald of Breezy Point were at the Bon Voyage luncheon at the Sofitel Hotel, in Manhattan last Thursday, given by the above mentioned gracious French donors in appreciation of the great courage and sacrifice displayed by our brave Firemen at the WTC on Sept. 11, that infamous day of terror and horror in New York City.

It was a beautiful luncheon, and I enjoyed seeing Henry and Tom, meeting Sarah and hubby, Brian, who have three children. Mary Cash, alone for that day, has 6 children, and was anxiously waiting to see if her husband, Firefighter Gerard Cash could fly out the next day to meet her. (The body of a fire fighter had just been found that day at ground zero and he, as Chief, was obligated to inform the family and could not be with her). I do hope he was able to meet her in France; Brien Germain, a fireman whose brother, Dennis, is still missing at the WTC was traveling with wife, Roseanne. They have two children, Nicholas and Brianne. There were many of our firefighters present looking forward to the great experience of visiting France, Paris and Lyon among some of the cities. France gave us our Statue of Liberty, but who would have thought they would make such a magnanimous gesture as to invite our Firemen to a fantastic FREE holiday in their country? This is just the first batch. Another group will be going on July 14th to commemorate the biggest French holiday, Bastille Day when one of our Fire Trucks (transported from New York) will be driven along the Champs Elysse for a huge parade that day. It sure makes one’s heart go out to these people with deep thanks. What a great display of appreciation for our bravest. And, what compassion for the sacrifices they had to make. Viva La France!

A beautiful press conference was held at the Tribecca Roof. The Director of French Tourism informed us of the new campaign," Get Up and Go’! Air France Concorde will be flying out daily from JFK and Newark starting in June. France is still the number one vacation destination. The Euro dollar is worth .90 cents of our dollar. They have a new Honeymoon French guide. Air France carries 5,000 passengers a day to Europe down only 10 % since last year. Rail Europe (Avanti) took over DER and rail tickets are available for a little as $199. You will be seeing new TV campaigns with Woody Allen and Mickey Mouse and other celebs. Kids enjoy unlimited travel FREE on Rail Europe Adults travel 4 days with 2 or 3 days rent a car in France and Italy. Super deals!

World Sports Academy members were in New York City at the N.Y. Athletic Club for the 2002 Laureus World Sports Awards Nominations Announcements. I got to know a little about Nawal El Moutawakel from Morocco., first Moroccan, African and Muslim woman to win the 200 meter hurdles Olympic gold medal. The Moroccan King was so impressed he declared that all girls born on the date of her victory were to be named after her. Her project as an academy member is education and sports in rural area. Edwin Moses remained invincible for nine years since 1983 in the 400-meter hurdles, with two Olympic Gold medals and 107 consecutive victories. After retiring from track he took up bobsledding. He is now inspirational in his Laureus work with families, parenting, health care and disciplining children. A great day with great athletes doing great deeds to improve the lives of our youth. That’s what Laureus is all about.

Bobby Healey is seriously ill and in the ICU unit at Mercy Hospital on Long Island.

Ellen and Lenny Wunder dined at the new Clementes Maryland Crabhouse that is just off the Belt Parkway past the Movie complex and were very pleased with the food and the service.. I can’t wait to dine there myself, which I will be doing very soon. I wish owner, Bobby O’Hara great success with it. His wife, Pat was in Kennedy’s when I met her last week and she told me about Bobby’s new enterprise. Last week’s restaurant on 264 Elizabeth Street off Houston in NYC is called M&R where you can order all the pasta you can eat on Sundays for $11.95. Frank Abbracciamento, former owner of Abbracciamento on the Pier in Canarsie, is the Exclusive Caterer for New York City’s Elegant Explorers Club in NYC. I will look for him the next time I attend an event there.
