Hadassah Announces Heart Awards

The Rockaway Park chapter of Hadassah has announced the recipients of its prestigious "From The Heart" awards for the year.

The honorees are the Reverend Monsignor Martin Geraghty of St. Francis de Sales parish in Belle Harbor and Hadassah’s Renee Freeman, the president of the local chapter.

Monsignor Geraghty has been the pastor of St. Francis since 1988. Prior to that, he was academic dean and professor of theology at the College Seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn. He was first ordained in St. Peter’s in Rome in December of 1964.Geraghty has a deep interest in Jewish-Christian relations and has been active in many interfaith endeavors.

For the past seven years, Renee Freeman has been the president of the local Hadassah chapter. She has been totally involved in all aspects of Hadassah’s agenda. Prior to holding her present office, she chaired programming and membership, and always filled in wherever needed.

The name of the Rockaway Park Chapter of Hadassah continues to be held in high esteem at the regional and national level as a result of her continuous efforts and involvement.

These awards are given annually to an outstanding community person and to a member of the organization’s ranks who has distinguished herself.

The presentations will be made at the annual Heart Luncheon, which will be held this year on May 14 at the Silver Gull Beach Club in Breezy Point.

Faye Cohen, the luncheon’s chairperson for the forty-second year in a row, is in charge of arrangements for the luncheon.

This luncheon is considered one of the highlights of the chapter’s calendar, with proceeds from the event going towards heart research and to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for local hospitals.

Reservations are required through the chairperson of members of her committee.
