Stella Maris High School started the 2002 Softball season with its opening practice on Sunday, March 3rd. The Lady Flipper Varsity roster includes: Seniors Dana DiMarco (captain), Kelly Fitzgerald (captain) and Liz Hurley. Sophomores Janine Bordo, Mary Caitlyn Cunneen, Tricia DeAngelo, Katelyn Henningsen, Liz Jablonski, Kim James, Nicole Santoro and Kate Scotko. Freshmen Kristy Forcina, Kerry Harnisher and Jennifer Seltzer. Mr. Thomas Landano (5th year) is the Varsity Coach.

SM's Junior Varsity team members are: Sophomores Jackie Geary, Marie Leddy and Kristeen Maguire. Freshmen Ana Arguera, Monica Curbello, Krysten Gaines, Jackie Kress, Tara Lynch, Kelly McKinley, Kate O'Sullivan, Kristi Popik, Katrina Van Sluyk, Tara Vasselman and Julien Vicens. Mrs. Maureen Gigliello (1st year) is the JV coach.

Both teams are very optimistic about their upcoming seasons. The varsity squad returns players in almost all key positions but still remains a relatively young team, as 75% of the roster is comprised of underclass women. On the JV level, 11 out of the 14 players are freshmen. Even with the season as young as it is, both teams have impressed the coaches with their dedication and enthusiasm.

League games begin on Monday March 25th for both squads. The Varsity opens against St. Francis Prep and the JV against St. Saviour. Both are away games. The Varsity then plays St. Agnes on Tuesday March 26th at home (the Varsity home field is located at Fort Tilden/Rockaway Little League Fields). The JV home opener is Tuesday April 9th vs. St. Edmund and their home field is at Stella Maris High School.

Flipper Footnotes: thank you LH for the impromptu fashion tips. MCC now we have all seen you slide! ML and TV any more questions? JK positive outlook and a poker face at all times. A special thank you goes to SM Alum Allison Bagley ("98) for coming back to offer some base stealing tips. Allison (Mt. St. Vincent's) is currently ranked 7th in the NCAA for stolen bases. Thanks also to Joe Digilio and his daughter Diana (Queens College) for their guest coaching appearances. The sliding/bat drill was the best of the day! And finally, Mr. Met, Coach Sertie, for his 2 hour clinic which covered the fundamentals of the game and offered great drills to continue developing skills.
