Service Learning

Dear Editor;

The most recent youth group to join our community service program was started by Quakers in 1983.The "YSOP" has been a pioneer in the field of service learning. Their staff have been resource leaders for Local, Regional and National organizations, including the Association of Independent Schools, United Federation of Teachers, National Governor's Conference and Americorps.

I was both surprised and honored when their request was made to send High School and College students to assist me at the "Loving Care Center" We are proud that our "GBLCC FARM PROJECT", SOUP KITCHEN and FOOD PANTRY" are becoming a "CENTER" for community service by Public School, High School and College youth. Our farm project is a large "Community Garden" used not only to produce food for our pantry clients or cook in our "Soup" but as a resource center for community development, education, leadership, organizing and by working with "JUST FOOD", "UNITED WAY of NYC" and "GREENTHUMB" building public support for the PRESERVATION of OPEN SPACE for food production. I salute the ATTITUDE of the youth I see here at "THE LOVING CARE CENTERâ018'. They are interested in getting involved in solving the hunger problems of today's working poor, families in crisis and even the homeless and not ridiculing their condition. We invite you to visit our site. Be you in need or able to donate. We are working with the America the Beautiful Fund of Washington D.C. to form our "FREEDOM GARDEN" in memory of the September 11 Victims. Learn how you can become a part, call me or stop by. We are located at 454 Beach 67th Street, Arverne, NY 11692. Our phone number is 718-634-7172 ext 20.
