AmeriCorps Will Assist P.S. 225

AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members will assist Public School 225 (Queens) and the community residing at the Ocean Village complex by providing the following services: Provide tutoring to the students attending P.S. 225 and assist the school's teachers in the classroom. In addition, NCCC will create, oversee, and run an after-school program emphasizing education and structured activities for P.S. School 225's students living in Ocean Village. Lastly, NCCC will create a senior center providing social and service activities for seniors residing in Ocean Village.

On March 1, twenty-two corps members from the Perry Point, MD campus of NCCC were deployed to the state of New York to aid several community needs in Arverne. NCCC members will provide mentoring to the students and create alternative activities for after school hours. In addition, NCCC work with the Department of Aging to create a community center for the senior citizens residing in the complex.

AmeriCorps is a national community service program that brings young people from across the country to serve their communities and the nation. The program is in its 8th year and has 40,000 members working in over 1,000 communities. The NCCC is the only residential program within AmeriCorps. Members work in the areas of education, environment, human needs, public safety, and disaster relief. They dedicate ten months to national service in exchange for a $4,725 educational award and a small living allowance.
