Richard D. Allen
FDNY Firefighter

Richard D. Allen, a 31-year-old lifelong resident of Rockaway Beach, was a victim of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. He became a victim of this tragedy as heroically saved lives in the line of duty. On September 11, Richie was doing what he loved to do by helping others.

Richie was a probationary New York City Firefighter with Engine 4/Ladder 15 in Manhattan. Although he was with the fire department for a short time, he fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Prior to becoming a fireman, Richie held several other jobs in New York City. He worked for the Sanitation Department, he was a teacher with the New York City Board of Education and he spent his summers working as a lifeguard in Rockaway. All of his jobs entailed serving the people of New York City and making a difference in people's lives.

He is survived by his parents, Richie Sr. and Gail; his two brothers Luke and Matthew; his three sisters Maggie, Lynn, Judy and her husband Mark; her close family relatives, Kathy, Charlie Sr., Charlie Jr. and Katie Marquardt as well as many other dear friends and relatives.

A wake will be held at Dennis S. O' Connor, Inc. on March 9 and March 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis De Sales Church.

Denise Carrington Flake
Wholesale Supervisor

Denise Carrington Flake, a lifelong resident of the Rockaway community, passed away on March 1, 2002 at the age of 32.

She is survived by her husband Steven; her sons Steven Jr., Justin, Tyreek, Dyshawn and Kareem; her sisters Ramono and Ashley; her brother Troy; her mother Eugenia; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Nora Gallagher
Beloved Wife

Nora (nee O' Connor) Gallagher, a native of Cordal, Castleland, Co. Kerry, was a resident of the Rockaway community. She passed away on March 2, 2002.

She is survived by her children James, Martin, Margaret, Cuzzi and Patricia Sullivan; her sisters Bridie, Maggie, Kathleen, Mary and Theresa; Grandmother of Molly, Megan, Madelyn, Tara, Brian, Aidan and Allish.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Mayme Gerstel
Restaurant Owner

Mayme Gerstel, born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, was a resident of the Rockaway community for over 70 years. She passed away on March 4 at the age of 92.

Mayme and her husband Julius were the owners of the landmark restaurant, Westrichs on Beach 116 Street. They were among the founding families of West End Temple in Neponsit.

She is survived by her husband Julius, her children Joel, Deanne, Joanne and Joel; her grandchildren Sharon, Jeffrey and Karen Gerstel and Harry and Kate Merker; her great grandchildren Dylan and Alexandra Gerstel; her brother Sam Dorfman and her sister Sophie Leifschutz.

Internment was held at Mt. Ararat Cemetery on March 5.

The family requests that contributions in her memory can be made to the Andrew Heiskell Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped on 40 West 20 Street, New York, NY 10011-4211.

Phebe Lucille Grover
Homemaker

Phebe Lucille Grover (nee Hensler), was a 60 year resident of Rockaway Beach. She died on February 25, 2002 at the age of 91.

She was preceded in death by her husband James B. Grover.

She is survived by her daughters Joan Hansen, Carol Angerer and Lorraine Burgess; her son James Grover; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of the Meserole Funeral Home was held at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Long Island.

George Thomas Kee
Mechanic

George Thomas Kee, born in Gates Bounty, North Carolina, was a resident of the Rockaway community for 40 years. He passed away on March 4, 2002.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a mechanic for most of his life.

He is survived by his wife Eugenia; his son George; his daughters Joyce Smith and Doris Saylor; her grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc. will be held on March 8, 2002 in Calverton National Cemetery.

Thomas F. Kieran Jr.
Teacher

Thomas F. Kieran Jr., born and raised n Belle Harbor, passed away on February 14, 2002 at the age of 61.

Thomas worked at Oxford University Press for 25 years, taught English as a Second Language at Borough of Manhattan Community College and taught handicapped children in the Bronx for the Board of Education. He was also involved in a number of gay rights and other political organizations.

Thomas is survived by his partner Jose Burgos; his father Thomas F. Kieran Sr.; his sisters Peggy Roth and Mary Kieran; his brother Walter; his sister-in-law Wendy; his niece Elizabeth Ross and his many friends.

A private burial was held on Long Island. A memorial service will held sometime in April.

Clara F. Coleman Logan
Church Mother

Mother Clara F. Coleman Logan, born in Louisa County, Virginia, was a resident of the Rockaway community. She passed away on February 24, 2002 at the age of 82.

Clara was a member of the Mothers Board of New York State and was bestowed the title of Church Mother by her pastor and church.

She is survived by her brother Wallace Coleman; her children Robert, Warren, Bernice, Salome, Hilda, Benjamin, Christine, Ernest, Dorine and Charlene; her godson Gardner; her daughters and sons- in law; her sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, adopted children and friends.

Internment under the direction of Isaiah Owens Funeral Service was held at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.

Catherine Louis
Beloved Wife

Catherine Louis (nee Bowe), born in Brooklyn, was a resident of Broad Channel. She passed away on March 1, 2002.

Catherine was a homemaker and factory worker.

She is preceded in death by her husband Arnold Louis.

Catherine is survived by her sons Robert and his wife and Michael and is wife; her grandchildren Jennifer, Erik, Stephanie, Michael and John and her great-grandchildren Nicholas and Hannah.

Internment under the direction of Hillebrand Funeral Home was held at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Glendale.

Rufus Mabon
Mechanic

Rufus Mabon, born in Arlington, Tennessee, was a resident of the Rockaway community. He passed away on February 26, 2002.

He is survived by her daughter Wanda Louden; her sons Abdul Rahman and Elvin Major; her sister Linda Rogers; her brother James, Jesse, Curtis and Douglas Rodgers and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Rockville Cemetery.

William J. Miley Sr.
Telephone Worker

William J. Miley Sr., a resident of the Rockaway community died on March 1, 2002.

William worked and retired from Verizon. He was a member of the American Legion #272 O'Connell Post and a veteran of the Army Air Force in World War II. He was also a great Yankees fan.

He is preceded in death by his wife Helen.

He is survived by his children William Jr., Kenneth, Robert, Michael, Christopher and Thomas; his sister Kathleen Mennona; grandfather of 20 children and a great grandfather of one child.

Interment was under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor.

William Neumann
Foreman

William Neumann, a lifelong resident of Far Rockaway, passed away on February 23, 2002 at the age of 89.

William worked as a foreman of the Sheffield Farms Milk Company.

He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Di Resto.

William is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel was held at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Thomas Roberts
Taxi Driver

Thomas Roberts, a resident of the Rockaway community died on February 22, 2002.

Thomas worked for the Beach Car Service.

He is survived by his sisters, Patricia, Diane, Sharon and Theresa; his brother Frank; his nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass will be held at St. Camillus on March 9 at 11 a.m.

Virginia Ryan
Housewife

Virginia Ryan, born in Sprott, Alabama, was a resident of the Rockaway community for 18 years. She passed away on February 5, 2002 at the age of 44.

She is survived by her sister Edwina and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Evergreen Crematory.

Albert Sherman
Salesman

Albert Sherman, born in Manhattan, was a resident of Rockaway Park for 30 years. He passed away on February 1, 2002 at the age of 91.

Albert worked in his father's bakery before moving to a successful career as a soft drink salesman with Coca-Cola Co and Yoo-Hoo Beverages. He was a determined golfer and a champion shuffleboard player.

He is survived by his wife Selma; his daughters Naomi, Sharon and Linda; his granddaughters Julie and Robin; his grandson Marc; his great-grandson Jacob.

Internment was held by the Hill and Wood Funeral Home at the Jewish Cemetery.

Patricia Sullivan
Beloved Mother

Patricia Sullivan, a resident of Belle Harbor, died on March 2, 2002.

She is preceded in death by the late John Francis and Gerard Sullivan.

She is survived by her children Kenneth and wife Bernadette Walsh, Kellyanne and husband Phillip Vanefsky, Patricia and husband Richard Keane, Heather Walsh and John Walsh; loving sister of Kenneth, William and James Sullivan, Elaine Frawley, Sr. Mary Elaine Sullivan FSP, Margaret Cordero and Rosemary Crawshaw; grandmother of Logan, Sidney, Brendan and Brian.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Calvary Cemetery.

Beloved Wife

Elaine S. Unger, a resident of the Belle Harbor for 40 years, passed away on March 3, 2002.

Elaine was a vice president of Haddasah, member of local Temples and a P.T.A. member.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harry.

Funeral arrangements were held by Riverside Memorial Chapel.

Fannie Wells
Domestic Worker

Fannie Wells, born in Sylvester, Georgia, was a 30 year resident of Far Rockaway. She died on March 4, 2002 at the age of 90.

Fannie worked as a domestic worker. She attended the First Baptist Church of Far Rockaway.

She is survived by her sister Sara Wright; her sons Jerard and James; her daughter Brenda Oliver; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc. will be held on March 8, 2002 at Amityville Cemetery.
