Belt Parkway Closed This Weekend

Belt Parkway Closed This Weekend

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that the Belt Parkway will be closed to traffic in both directions from Springfield Boulevard to Rockaway Boulevard, from Friday evening, March 8 at 10 p.m. until Monday morning, March 11 at 5 a.m. The closing is necessary to facilitate the demolition of the Guy R. Brewer Boulevard Bridge that spans the parkway.

According to the DOT, during this 55-hour period traffic will be detoured off the parkway and onto either the South Conduit or the North Conduit, depending on the direction of travel.

The agency says that this two-day closing is preferable to the other option of closing the road each night for a period of six to eight weeks.

"A sufficient number of Traffic Enforcement Agents will be assigned at various locations along Conduit Avenue to maintain the flow of traffic around the clock during the demolition," a spokesperson for the DOT says. In addition, a shuttle bus will be provided for the skipped bus stops along Guy Brewer Boulevard between the North Conduit and 134th Avenue.

"We want to apologize for any inconvenience that may occur during this operation and ask your cooperation," a DOT spokesperson adds.

Those with questions may contact M. Arain, the resident engineer on the project at 995-9277.
