Suspicious Death Ruled HomicideBy Howard Schwach
Last Monday, police responding to a call from her brother-in-law, found Brenda Kelly, 56, dead in her apartment at 81-01 Beach Channel Drive, in the Hammels development.
According to police sources, the 100-pound woman was found on the floor, toppled from her wheelchair, bleeding from a gash in the back of her head. A broken vase was on the floor next to her body.
Paramedics called to the scene declared her dead.
Police, however, were not sure whether they had an accidental death or a homicide.
According to Ellen Borakove, a spokesperson for the Medical Examiner, however, that death has now been declared a homicide.
An autopsy on Tuesday declared that she had died from "blunt trauma to the head and torso, with rib fractures, lacerations of the spleen and internal hemorrhaging."
According to police, Kelly's home health aide left the apartment at approximately 6:15. When Kelly's brother-in-law came home at 7 p.m. he found the body on the floor and called police.
Detectives from the 100 Precinct are investigating.
