October Walk Can Save Lives

October Walk Can Save Lives

Rockaway residents are invited to participate in the Avon Three Day for Breast Cancer. This is a sixty-mile walk from Bear Mountain to Downtown Manhattan. The October 2002 event will benefit breast cancer research.

Every year over 100,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and sadly, 40,000 of those women will not survive the battle.

The donations of the individuals and organizations that are kind enough to sponsor those in the walk will benefit not only breast cancer research, but will also provide free mammograms to women who do not have the financial means or the health insurance necessary to obtain early screenings.

Kristine Lawless of Broad Channel asks for sponsorship. "By signing up for this fundraising event, I have committed myself to raising not only the required $1,900 in donations, but I have set a personal goal of $5,000. All I’m asking is for residents of the Rockaways to assist not only me, but everyone who has, is, or one day, will be affected by breast cancer."

Lawless says that there are currently 2,000,000 women living in the United States today who have battled breast cancer and won. That may seem like a large number at first, but to the many husbands, children, parents and friends of victims,` that number will never be enough.
