Wasn't she great? Wasn't she spectacular? Isn't she sweet? Isn't she adorable? And, aren't we proud that a competitor from Queens, Sarah Hughes, only 16 years old, glided along the ice in flawless grace, giving a perfect performance in women's Figure Skating Olympic competition to capture the Gold Medal for the USA. Congratulations, Sarah. Just think what you will be in the years to come. Though you couldn't be any better than your were, you have years and years to improve on your perfection. We will all be watching you grow. And, thank you for bringing home the Gold for us.
Of course, I know you will all be wearing green for the Rockaway St. Patrick's Day Parade this Saturday. Though I covered it for years with my television crew and thoroughly enjoyed it, this year I will be flying out to Santo Domingo to produce another "Travels in Style" television program on the Dominican Republic. Regardless, I am sure this year's Rockaway St. Patrick's Day Parade will surpass all others, especially with our brave and glorious heroes, all our Firemen and Policemen marching along. And, I hear, Mayor Bloomberg is going to march. You will see all the politicians and dignitaries representing our Peninsula. You may not see me, but I will be there in spirit as will Jimmy Conway Sullivan, founder of the second largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City for whom this year's parade is dedicated. Beverly Baxter always does a fine job in covering this parade, the preliminary fundraisers and post parties. See her column for all particulars. And, do have fun and enjoy.
With deep sadness I look back on the passing of our publisher, Leon Locke whose anniversary of his death was marked last week. It was right after Leon took over The WAVE that he summoned me to come aboard. I remember how dedicated he was in keeping the Rockawayites abreast of all that was going on in the community and how adamant he was that all voices be heard regardless of whether he lost an ad through harsh criticism in a letter published. He had my admiration for his strong convictions of Freedom of Speech. He strove to expand The WAVE from Far Rockaway to the very tip of Breezy Point. And, look at it today! Susan Locke must be commended for her fortitude and determination and hard work in stepping into Leon's shoes as present Publisher of The WAVE. She sure is doing a great job! Keep up the good work, Susan. Leon must be proud of you.
A few B.P.S.C. members got together for a friendly brunch at Buckleys in Brooklyn this past weekend:. Marylou and Charlie Lyons, Helen Spitz, Cathleen McCormack and Tom Connors all had fun remembering the good times they had at the BPSC and the good times they are looking forward to in the coming season.
Condolences to Kevin Butler on the death of his mother Joan Butler from Breezy Point.
The Buoniconti Fund is a fund raising foundation for care and research for those with Spinal Cord Injury that leaves each patient severely paralyzed. To benefit this cause the First annual Casino Night was held at the Puck Building at Lafayette and Houston Streets and what a turnout it was! Free $25 chip upon entrance, open bar and hot and cold hor d'oeuvres, live auction, music, fun and lots of young people and celebrities such as: actress, Ally Sheedy, Jet's Fullbac, Brad Baxter and more. A great evening out. Be sure you make it next year.
The Bio-Tech Expo was in town and it was extremely interesting. So many medical breakthroughs have great potential and their research has proven a high percentage of successful results. However, these new medications and breakthroughs still may not get the FDA approval. Therefore, one must be very cautious in choosing companies in which to invest. Research, research, research.

A few weeks ago I mentioned the High Heeled bags I discovered at the Accessory Show in New York.
The designer is Shassana Smith whom I interviewed on one of my television segments. (Some of you may have seen the piece). Well, Shassana called to tell me these unique, colorful and attractive bags will appear at the Grammy awards this coming weekend as an accessory for some of the celebrities.
