We Need Your Help!
We Need Your Help!
We are taking this time to write to your paper, to state a few things; first of all we would like to say that we are the International Association Of Volunteer Firefighters, and its Emergency Disaster Special Services Unit. Our operating area is the Rockaways, South Queens, South Brooklyn and South Nassau, and JFK Airport. We have nothing to do with the following areas: Broad Channel and Breezy Point.
We no longer get involved with fires; we now specialize on Disasters, be they man-made or natural-made. With our brother organization and its weather station here in Rockaway, in the New York Metro area we now have one hundred and one active members, and many, many more from around the world.
All my people are very dedicated and will go in harms way 24 hours per day so others can live. We are in the process of reorganization; as such we will be able to do more for the area that we do cover. We are now seeking funds from wherever we can get it to buy two-way radios, and other equipment, of all kinds. We hope that before July of this year, that we will have enough to get the equipment we are in dire need of.
What we fail to understand is why we are getting help from other areas, such as Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk, and from our brothers and sisters around the world. We have help coming in from all over except from the communities of the Rockaways, who act like they could care less.
Your newspaper, prints items backing several projects here in the Rockaways. But you never once put a good word for us. You only find things to hurt us, since The Wave is under the control of organizations of the West End and its elected officials. It seems to us that you could care less about the fact that my people are dedicated to the saving of lives and disasters such as 9-11 and the air crash.
In the past four years we have been asking you to give us a chance, and to find out what we are and where we are coming from. But all you do is listen to big mouths, which spread rumors (not founded) about our organization. We would like you to come to our meetings and hear for yourself what is going on so you might be able to help us.
We are now in the process of calling out to all the communities we operate in to donate funds to us, and/or help us with certain equipment we need and can use. We can also use new, dedicated members who will be just as dedicated, as our members are now. We hope that people coming into our organization will know and try to see what we are trying to get done.
We hope that after four years of banging our heads against the wall (mostly due to our elected officials), we hope that there is some help out there. We can understand that in response to this letter you will get hard heads, which like to knock everything and everyone. Well this message is for them: back off since you are stupid nuts in the first place; if you have something good, say it. But if have something not good, keep it to yourself.
We intend to have some fundraisers in April for our organization; one in Brooklyn, one in Queens, one in Staten Island, and one in Rockaway. We hope that the community will come out and donate and sign-up with us. We are only trying to get things done so we can help save lives. We also give out all kinds of flyers and booklets from FEMA on weather subjects and disasters. If anyone from the communities needs this information, they can get them by calling us at 718-471-8999 at any time 24 hours per day, day in and day out. If they need FEMA flyers and booklets for any of their meetings, just let us know and we will get the items to them.
Again we say that we fail to understand why this paper will not even try to help us. We are only trying to get a unit together to help save lives. We hope that you will find a way to help our very dedicated people. We are even trying to get an interview on TV in the hope this might be of help.
Thank you, and we request that you print this whole letter.
