Jury Selection Begins In Redfern Slay

On March 10, 2000, 46 bullets flew back and forth outside of the Redfern Houses in Far Rockaway, the gunplay coming from two groups of gunmen intent on doing harm to each other.

Caught in the middle of the barrage was tenant patrol leader Marie Medina, sitting in the lobby of 15-40 Hassock Street.

Medina told her young daughter to run upstairs. Then, she was mortally wounded by the gunplay. She managed to crawl to the elevator. She died on the fourth floor.

Four Rockaway men were arrested for the shooting spree and for Medina’s murder.

Jury selection began this week for two of those men, Osimba Rabsatt, 19 and Tullie Hyman, 21.

They are charged with murder.

Prosecutors allege that Rabsatt, driving a red Acura and Hyman, driving a green Mazda, drove to 15-40 Hassock Street and opened fire on Jonathan Whitmore, 25 and Derrick Harris, 33, who were standing in front of the building. All four of the men are Rockaway residents.

Whitmore and Harris, who allegedly returned fire, are awaiting trial.
