BJC Hosts ‘Shabbat Across America’

BJC Hosts ‘Shabbat Across America’

The Bayswater Jewish Center, on Healey Avenue in Bayswater, will be one of 750 synagogues across the nation that will simultaneously open its doors to practicing and non-practicing Jews alike, so that "they might join together to experience and rejoice in a traditional Shabbat service," according to a spokesperson from the synagogue.

The National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP) sponsors the event, which will take place on Friday evening, March 8.

"This represents a major effort by Judaism’s four major movements to renew interest in the fourth of the Ten Commandments," says a spokesperson for NJOP. "That commandment calls for the observance of a weekly day of rest – a Shabbat in Hebrew."

Led by Rabbi Mordecai Benjaminson, those in attendance will experience an interactive Friday night beginner’s service as well as a traditional Shabbat dinner. All the rules for the dinner will be explained.

The Shabbat will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the synagogue, located at 2355 Healy Avenue.
