Honoring Her Memory

Honoring Her Memory

With the passing of Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings last week, many of her colleagues from the business and political world have expressed a need to finish the projects she had started in the Far Rockaway community. State Senator Malcolm Smith and the Executive Director of the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC), Curtis Archer, have stated that the proposed aviation school at 6200 Beach Channel Drive will be named after the late District 31 representative. "This would be a fitting tribute to honor her memory and legacy," said the State Senator. Without question, this is a start in the right direction. However, if her colleagues are truly serious about maintaining her legacy, they should come together on all levels, not just to name a school after her, but to restore hope, trust and economic opportunity in a community that has suffered throughout the years. Buildings crumble and decay with time, but a renewed sense of hope and spirit can last a lifetime.
