St. Johns Appoints Belle Harbor Resident

St. Johns University has appointed Margaret M. McCann, former NYPD Detective and Investigator, to the position of Executive Director of Public Safety, effective February 4, 2002. In her role as Executive Director of Public Safety, Margaret will focus on the administration and direction of public safety on the Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan and Oakdale campuses. McCann replaces Ray Muchow, who retired last year.

"Ms. McCann brings to us a driven collegial style that emphasizes strong communication and comprehensive training," said James Pellow, Executive Vice President and Treasurer of St. Johns University. "We welcome Margaret to St. Johns and in her role to lead our efforts for the safety and well being of our University Community."

While at the New York City Police Department, Ms. McCann was a member of an elite group of NYPD Professionals specially trained in all aspects of plant, site and personal security. In addition, Ms. McCann comes with a highly specialized knowledge and expertise of all aspects of security technology. Currently in the private sector, Ms. McCann achieved a broad scope of experience in both institutional and residential safety and security that includes fire and life safety while managing a staff of 80 unarmed security and fire officers.

Up until her appointment, Ms. McCann has served as Director of Public Safety/Security responsible for the full operation of New York Hospital in Queens, with 60 locations. Prior to this position, Ms. McCann was Chief of Security overseeing all aspects of security for a 153-acre high-rise housing complex with over 20,000 residents in the East New York section of Brooklyn. She has developed a comprehensive site-specific fire plan, which includes training curriculum for fire wardens, fire response teams and oversee all aspects of a Class E Fire Alarm Monitoring System; instituted aggressive customer service initiatives to upgrade and improve performance and effectiveness; and served as liaison with all local authorities in matters of mutual concern while conducting community wide education programs for safety and security.

Ms. McCann is a member of American Society Industrial Security (ASIS), Metropolitan Security Director’s Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Fraternal Order of Police, Retired Detectives Association and the Fire Safety Director’s Association. She is a resident of Belle Harbor, NY.
