GRAYBEARDS Coming Out Party
Induct Msgr. Geraghty and Bernie Heeran
By Steve Stathis

Last Friday night at the Knights of Columbus, 200 people attended the Graybeards Inaugural Dinner/Dance held to recognize two members of our community, who have demonstrated through their actions over the years to be caring for others in their time of need. Both individuals have gone about doing for others in their own special way. The Graybeards, a newly formed "not-for-profit" community organization whose mission statement includes among other things: "to care for those in the community in times of need" deemed it appropriate to publicly recognize Msgr. Geraghty for his 13 years of service to the people of the Rockaways and Bernie Heeran for his generosity over the past 30 years.

The dance was a fundraiser used to generate monies to be placed in the Graybeard general fund and dispersed as needed for various events and activities, some of which are already scheduled and others still in the planning stages. The next scheduled event will take place on Feb. 14, 2002, when John Carlson, a magician, will put on two shows for the children of St. Francis de Sales. Thanks to a last minute suggestion by Ellen Daly (nee Stathis) to hold a raffle, with gifts being donated, the fundraiser was a major success. D.J. Mouse provided the music and a good time was had by all!

Bernie Heeran was unable to attend, but passed along his thanks to the Graybeards for being recognized. Msgr. Geraghty was in attendance and gave a very special acceptance speech encouraging the Graybeards to keep up the good work, as the community needs an organization that they can count on being there for them in their time of need.

The Graybeards want to extend a heart-felt "thank you" to everyone who attended and/or supported the dinner/dance by donating raffle gifts. We are encouraged by this support and look forward to being a positive force in our community for years to come.
