On The Beach… With Beverly Baxter

Arverne By The Sea, the 400 million dollar development plan that is anticipated to inevitably change and revitalize the entire peninsula is scheduled to break ground some time in June of this year according to several sources involved with the project. The development will be constructed as a joint venture between two icons in the construction industry: The Benjamin Organization and Beechwood Developers. The Benjamin-Beechwood partnership to produce Arverne By The Sea will advance in four phases and will take approximately five years to complete. According to the principals, Al Benjamin, Les Lerner, and Mike Dubb, there will be 2300 residential units of one and two family homes, market rate rentals, and senior citizen apartments. There will be a community center, a pool, 200,000 square feet of retail space, a 10,000 square foot day care center, six mini parks, and an 800-student charter school. The project, which will include the area between Beach 62 and Beach 75 Street, will advance in four stages: The Breakers: two family homes, The Dunes: two and one family homes, The Tides: market rate rentals, and Palmer's Landing: two family homes.

After so many years of prime vacant land that lay dormant, Arverne By The Sea, is a development plan that makes sense and, once realized, will have a positive impact on the entire community. It is my opinion that we will now see a rapid increase in new construction and a ripple effect through out the peninsula. Get ready, Rockaway!

***Mayor Bloomberg, Mayor Giuliani, and Cardinal Eagan have all been invited to march on March 2 in our parade. According to parade Chairman Mike Benn, "invitations have gone out and we await confirmation." Mayor Giuliani, while he is enjoying his new life as a private citizen, has marched with us in the last 10 parades. He continued after his second term when it was clear he had
nothing more to gain by doing so. Who knows, maybe he'll come and march with us again, or perhaps he wouldn't want to eclipse newly elected Bloomberg.

John DunLevy, the Chairman of the Fifth Avenue parade is expected to join us, as he usually does, at the Antun's Gala and our parade. It is anticipated that he just may bring a much-welcomed guest: Cardinal Eagan who is being honored as Grand Marshall in the parade up Fifth. Congressman Tom Manton has been chosen as the recipient of our Irishman of the Year Award.

Democratic District Leader Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey will present the award.

Other invited dignitaries include Senators Charles Schumer, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Congressman Mark Weiner, the Mayor of Limerick, union leaders, former grand marshals, and a representative from the Irish Consulate. If you plan to attend the Gala at Antun's, then you'll want to obtain your tickets to the $65 a plate benefit as soon as possible as it is expected to sell out fast.

***For those who are attending the dinner dance at Antun's and would prefer to leave their car at home, arrangements have been made for charter bus transportation to and from the event. The bus will stop at various locations throughout the west end of Rockaway including The Irish Circle, The Palm Garden, Kerry Hills, and Jameson's. The bus may stop at other locations.

I'll let you know as soon as other locations are confirmed. Tickets for the bus are $10 a person and may be obtained at The Beautiful Palm Garden or see Mary Alice Lane for details.
***Local Attorney Joseph P. Trainor is perhaps the most decent and honorable person whom I've met during the occasion of his honor as Deputy Grand Marshall. The committee has demonstrated its high standard in its selection process and Mr. Trainor is much deserving of this honor bestowed upon him. He also has such an attractive family. Congratulations, Joe.

***I'd like to extend sincere thanks to Jay from Belle Harbor Plumbing. He knows why! It's so refreshing to have a concerned professional immediately answer a late night call when one has an emergency. Thanks, Jay!
***Happy February 7 Birthday Wishes to my friend Barbara J. Morris!

See you...On the Beach!
