Two Are Better Than One

Two Are Better Than One

Dear Editor;

A recent editorial urged the creation of the City Council District for the Rockaways. As a Councilperson who would have no problem serving the entire community, I wish to respond. Although the editorial was thought provoking it missed two points that argue for two separate seats.

Point one: two Council people arguing for the well being of our community are better that one. In the Council you need 26 votes to pass an item, and two Council people can work the aisles better than one. Point two: two Council members can serve on more Committees than one. I have been blessed to chair the Economic Development Committee, and serve on the Transportation, Consumer Affairs, Fire and Criminal Justice Services, and Women's Issues Committees. Yet my equally worthy City Council colleague, Joseph Addabbo, chairs the Parks and Recreation Committee and serves on the Governmental Relations, Contracts, and State and Federal Legislation Committees. Count them, nine important Committees. Which four are you willing to surrender?

A better argument should be that better cooperation between the City Council persons should result in a better-served community. I am pleased to say that Council Member Addabbo and myself are working in harmony to insure that our joint constituents are well served.

To conclude, two great Council members are better than one.

JAMES SANDERS, JR.
31ST CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT
