Addabbo To Chair Parks Committee

Addabbo To Chair Parks Committee

Queens Council Member Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. of District 32, was named chair of the City Council’s Committee on Parks and Recreation on Wednesday, January 16, 2002.

Addabbo is a longtime community activist whose interest in parks was spurred by volunteerism. As president of his local civic organization for eight years and a member of Community Board #10 for seven years, Addabbo’s past experience has brought him into contact with organizations like Green Streets and the Partnerships for Parks, that have improved the quality of life for residents in the area.

"I am looking forward to working with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Parks are used and cherished by everyone from seniors to children. My priorities for the Parks Committee will focus on maintaining conditions where satisfactory, upgrading where necessary, and improving the safety in and around our parks. All of this needs to be done at a time of serious budget constraints, and that will be a challenge." That is a challenge that Addabbo is ready and willing to take on. An appropriate and important appointment for Addabbo, the 32nd Council District has a large portion of parkland, which includes approximately 50% of the Rockaway Beaches. He has already scheduled to meet with current Parks Commissioner Henry Stern as well as the Borough Commissioners to be briefed on the current status of outstanding issues and concerns.

Other Committees Addabbo will be sitting on include, State and Federal Legislation, Contracts, General Welfare and Governmental Operations. The responsibilities of the Contracts Committee contain procurement policies and procedures as well as oversight over government contracts. General Welfare embodies the agencies of Human Resources Administration, Department of Social Services, Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, charitable institutions, and the Department of Employment. Addabbo will be able to draw on his legal background, and once again his volunteer experience, as the Governmental Operations Committee works with municipal government structure and organization, Community Boards and the Law Department among other City Agencies.
