Rockaway Students Receive Recreational Fun

By Greg Carter

At last, the Rockaway community, thanks to the vision and understanding of numerous people, will finally have a form of recreational/sports linkage in our middle schools. Special thanks must be given to the wisdom and vision of Mr. Matthew Bromme, CSD 27 Superintendent, Mrs. Fern Zagor, Project Director of Project Rockaway for Youth in Safety and Education (PRYSE) and the Police Athletic League (PAL).

They have started a 3 on 3 middle school basketball league. Each middle school principal and gym teacher has selected the children, who you will get to know through the Wave with our Student/Athlete of the Week. Five eight-grade girls and five eight-grade boys were selected in the process.

All students at MS 180, MS 43, and MS 53 are picked up by bus. The Subway Sandwich shop gives our student/athletes a sandwich, juice and a snack. All games are at MS 198 on Monday and begin at 5 pm. We have special guests that speak to the youth prior to the all games. What else can I say but that we are all excited about the future vision of sports linkage in our middle schools.

A special and truly heartfelt thank you to the following people, because they really displayed caring for the youth and they truly stepped up to the plate. The four principles of the following schools: Beth Longo, MS 198, George Giberti, MS 180, Charles Dluzniewski, MS 53 and John Quattrochi, M.S. 43.

A special mention is also given to Gym Teachers, Carl Gridell of MS 180, Daniel O' Conner of MS 53 and John Cota of MS 43. These guys without pay help out tremendously on Monday, and I along with the kids really respect what you guys did. Thanks!!
