Both of the newly-elected City Council members who represent portions of Rockaway have hit it big in the committee chairperson lottery and Rockaway may very well wind up the winner.

Joe Addabbo, Jr., who represents the 32nd Councilmanic District, which encompasses the West End of Rockaway, as well as a number of mainland communities, will chair the all-important Parks Committee.

It is common for newly-elected city councilpersons to begin on the lowest seniority wrung, being assigned to the committees that others with more seniority do not want to belong to and spending years toiling in the vineyards prior to receiving the plum of a chairmanship of an important committee.

With term limits, however, all bets were off this year and our two newly-elected council representatives not only drew important committees right out of the gate, but have been awarded with the chairs of two of the most prestigious council committees.

"I'm really glad that I got Parks because it gives me a chance to get involved with Rockaway's problems, with the beaches and with the lifeguard situation," says Addabbo. "I have already begun speaking with Stern (Parks Commissioner Henry Stern) and with the borough commissioners."

Addabbo is assigned as a committee member to four other committees: General Welfare, Governmental Operations, State and Federal Legislation and Contracts.

"I guess that the speaker took my legal background into account," Addabbo says. "I'm sure that I can benefit my district on each of those committees.
Sanders has been assigned as a member of four committees as well: Woman's Issues, Consumer Affairs, Transportation and Fire/Criminal Justice.

"I really will be able to serve my district as the chair of the Economic Development Committee," Sanders told The Wave. "That committee addresses all development issues brought before the council."

"This bodes well for Rockaway," an experienced political hand told The Wave. "Those committees are important to the continued development and revitalization of the peninsula, and having our representatives as their chairs is a big plus."
