AAU Angels Take Christmas Gold

AAU Angels Take Christmas Gold

The AAU Angels 8th Grade Girls basketball team won their division of the Island Garden Christmas Classic. The team took five straight games in the holiday season tournament. The girls came through in typical Angels Style.

Down to five girls for most of the tournament because of missing players due to illness or the holidays, the girls came through with some real courageous performances. Jill Brady played point guard and continually getting the ball through the full court press. With only five girls, every team used the full court press and fast break to wear the girls down. Brady, with her great ball control and determination brought her team through it. Jill also scored 43 points and many assists in the tournament. Jill has been a major factor in the team’s success and chemistry.

Corrine Hurley and Jennifer Angelero were co-MVP winners. Corrine had 73 points in the tournament. In the championship game, she scored 15 points and shot 6 of 7 free throws. Jennifer Angelero scored 77 points in the tournament and controlled the boards for the Angels. Jennifer is a force on both ends of the court. Janine Maser was also a force under the boards for the Angels. Her continued aggressive play, and 29 tournament points, was certainly a reason for the team’s success.

Katie Pastina’s return from the flu was the biggest boost to the team’s performance. In Katie’s first game back, she scored ten points. Katie made the tying basket with about 14 seconds left in the championship game.

Mary Grace Brady came through with her best game of the season in scoring 16 points and was super under the boards. She also had several assists including Katie’s game tying bucket. M.G. stepped it up in this game, hitting the go-ahead basket and later hit two free throws for the winning margin.

The girls won in Double-Overtime and had to finish the game with only four girls on the court because two girls fouled out. They won the game even after being down fifteen points in the second half. Congratulations Girls, great job! The Angels will be holding tryouts in January for 13 and 14 year olds. For more information, call 718-634-6571.
