Erol A. Brown
Accountant

Erol A. Brown, born in Jamaica, West Indies, was a 21 year resident of Rockaway. He passed away on January 3, 2002.

Erol worked as an accountant for many years.

He is survived by his brother, Al and a host of other relatives and friends.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home will be held at Rockville Cemetery on January 14, 2002.

Daniel Bongiorni
Bridge Painter

Daniel Bongiorni, born in Brooklyn, was a resident of Rockaway for 40 years and died on January 2.

Daniel served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worshipped at St. Thomas More Church and participated in the Rockaway/Breezy Point Catholic Club. He was a member of the VFW. Daniel was also a bricklayer.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Dolly.

He is survived by his daughter Betty Butler; his brother Joseph and his grandchildren Bobby and Marybeth.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Denis S. O’ Connor, Inc. Funeral Home.

Archie Dowdell Jr.
Construction Worker

Archie Dowdell Jr., born in Auburn, Alabama, was over a 30-year resident of Rockaway. He passed away on December 29, 2001 at the age of 72.

Archie worked as a construction worker for many years.

He is survived by his son Archie, Jr; his daughter Earlene Chandler; his sisters Fannie White and Rose Reese; and a host of other brothers and sisters.

Interment was held under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home.

John L. Gradiska
Security Guard

John L. Gradiska, was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Beach. He passed away on January 6, 2002.

John served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a security guard for Hospital Security at PHC. He worshipped at St. Rose of Lima Church.

He is survived by his wife Susan (Nee King) Gradiska; his sons John Corbett, James Gradiska and John Gradiska and his daughters Valerie Kogut, Diane Powers and Pricillia Romano.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

George F. Healy
Proprietor

George F. Healy, born in Manhattan, was a 64 year resident of Rockaway, coming from the Bronx. He passed away on January 8, 2002.

George served with the U.S. Army during World War II. George was the (retired) proprietor of Healy’s Tavern. He served as an active member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He was a founding member of the Married Men’s Club.

He is preceded in death by his wives, Mary (nee Hynes) and Eileen Naughton Murphy.

He is survived by his 9 children and their respective spouses; Geraldine and Patrick Reynolds, Patricia and John Leonard, Georgine and John Sullivan, George and Jackie, Thomas and Kathy, James and Mary Dee, Robert and Beatriz and John and Vicky Healy and Marilyn and Robert Vincent. He was the loving grandfather of 26 children and great-grandfather of ten.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will be held at Long Island National Cemetery on January 11, 2002.

Hattie Martin
Domestic

Hattie Martin, born in Akien, South Caroline, was a Rockaway resident for most of her life. She passes away on December 17, 2001 at the age of 83.

Hattie worked as a domestic for most of her life.

She is survived by her niece Joyce Williams.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home was held at Forest Park Cemetery.

Alipio Pabon
Maintenance

Alipio Pabon, born in Puerto Rico, was a resident of Arverne for 7 months, coming from Fort Greene, Brooklyn. He passed away on January 6, 2002.

Alipio worked as a maintenance man for most of his life.

Alipio worshipped at St Michael Church and St. Edward’s Church in Brooklyn.

He is preceded in death by his wife Eugenia Torres and his son Aguido.

He is survived by his sons, Jose and Raymond; his daughters, Margarita Rios, Iris Calderon and Rosemary Santana; his sister Francesca Cruz and his 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Greenwood Cemetery.

Julia A. Perpinka
Secretary/Stenographer

Julia A. Perpinka, born in Brooklyn, was a resident of Rockaway for 86 years. She passed away on January 3, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre.

Julia worked as a secretary and a stenographer for the United States War Department.

She is preceded in death by her husband Wm. J. Perpinka Sr., who died in 1989 and her son, Wm. J. Jr, who died in March of 2000.

She is survived by her 3 children, Eileen O’ Shea, Anne K. Winters and Julie A. Kurz; her sister Alice Miller; her brother George Paulukonis; and 6 grandchildren.

Internment under the direction of The Meserole Funeral Home was held at St. Charles R.C. Cemetery in Pinelawn, Long Island.

Catherine Phillips
Homemaker

Catherine Phillips, born in New York City, was a longtime resident of Rockaway. She passed away on January 5, 2002 at the age of 88.

Catherine spent much of her life as a homemaker, and was an active member of the St. Virgilius and St. Senior Citizens and St. Camillus

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and her son, Charles, Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Edward; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson, Jack Thomas.

Interment under the direction of Hillebrand Funeral Home was held at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery, in Long Island.

Thomas J. Shannon
Foreman

Thomas J. Shannon, born in Manhattan, was a resident of Belle Harbor for 8 years, coming from Brooklyn. He passed away on January 3, 2002.

Thomas served with the U.S. Army during the Korea War. He was a senior foreman with the New York City Environmental Protection Agency. He worshipped at St. Francis De Sales Church.

He is survived by his wife Francis (Honey) (Nee Murphy); children Thomas J. Jr., Denise Nopper, Kathleen Furlong and James B. Dear; he was father in law of Margaret, Vincent and Eileen. His grandchildren Andrew (A.J.), Kimberly, Kristin, Tommy, Charles, Brian, Katie, Jimmy and Kayleigh; fond brother of Patrick, Margaret Gerke and the late Dennis and Mary Farrell.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Bonner Lee Warren
Postal Supervisor

Bonner Lee Warren, born in Perote Alabama, was 43 year resident of Rockaway. She passed away on January 6, 2002 at the age of 43.

Bonner worked as a postal supervisor.

He is survived by his wife Alta Warren; his sons Tracy and Torrance; and survived by 3 brothers, 6 sisters and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home will be held at Rockville Cemetery on January 12, 2002.
