Simon Says….
From the Desk of Lew M. Simon,
Democratic District Leader, 23rd A.D. Part B

Wow, can we believe it, it’s 2002. What were your New Year’s resolutions for this year? My resolutions for this year are to work even harder, if that’s possible, for my community and to make a difference in the quality of life.

I wish to thank all of you who have sent beautiful greeting cards. We made a joke that if everyone who sent a card contributed $1.00, our organization would have no problems keeping our doors open.

It was great to receive a holiday card from one elected official who said they doubled my pay. Two times nothing is nothing. Try using nothing to pay bills.

Now to a lighter side. We have reached out to the FAA. We sent a formal request in writing to the Eastern Regional Office of Regional Administrator Arlene B. Feldman. She sent me a letter in reply.

"At this time it is not possible for us to meet with you. Currently we are dialoguing directly with Congressional officials representing the same constituency, plus giving congressional briefings on Capitol Hill. We are well aware of the issues your community has with aviation and can tell you we are working closely with the Port Authority of NY/NJ and elected officials to address those issues."

We had requested that the FAA meet with members of this community. As you can see they only talk to Congress and the Port Authority. For shame on the FAA because our taxes pay their salary. They treat us like peasants who don’t count. At the same time we have reached out to Congressman Anthon Weiner and asked him to bring the FAA dialogue with our community. He said he was working on this problem.

We urge all of you to write to Arlene B. Feldman at the Eastern Regional Office of the FAA at 1 Aviation Plaza, Jamaica, N.Y. 11434-4809 and let her know we are sick and tired of planes flying over homes. Send a copy to Congressman Anthony Weiner. His address appears on the editorial page of this paper.

In my column last week, I failed to mention that the Bay Towers Tenants Association under the leadership of President Terry Harris made sure all senior citizens got a nice basket of fruit for Christmas. Hats off for the wonderful kind gesture.

We were very saddened last week to read that a Christmas Eve fire displaced a family of four from their home. I immediately reached out to Cathy Martinez, who happens to be a dear friend of ours.

Cathy was very thankful she and her two children made it out alive. She wished to thank the men who saved her children. At the time of the fire, her husband was working.

She requested anyone who can help her get clothing her children can wear. Her son wears men’s medium shirts and underwear, boy’s extra large in jogging pants and shoe size 5. Her daughter wears girl’s size 8 and 13 ½ shoes. Mother Cathy is 2X or 22 in size. They lost all their clothes.

They require blankets, pillows, mattresses and other bedroom furniture. They would welcome any volunteer labor to replace sheetrock walls. Anybody interested in making a check to aid the family can send the check to Cathy Martinez c/o her mom, Margaret Nerney, 30 West 13 Road, Broad Channel 11693.

The fire destroyed the top floor of their home. They had been unable to obtain fire insurance. If you need any further information, call my office at 945-1216.

Our next Atlantic City trip will be on Saturday, January 12. The cost is $25 with $16 returned. This is the highest cash return in the NYC area. You enjoy eight hours at the Trump Marina. We leave at 5:30 p.m. and return at 8 a.m. Hop on the bus with us.

Those sending contributions to our volunteer fire departments should make the check payable to the Volunteer Firefighter Association and mail it to P.O. Box 932, Rockaway Park N.Y. 11694.

Membership in the Good Government Regular Democratic Club is available to all. We are open every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 11 p.m. You can be a member by sending in your dues of $18 single, $25 family and $12 for seniors, disabled and Young Dems. The club address is 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park 11694.
