Chatting With Chapey

by Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey

As the year 2001 slipped away, everyone was hopeful that the New Year would bring an end to the terrible sorrows of last year and open a new day with hope.

As each of us reviews our past and looks forward to the future we are inclined to make New Year's resolutions. Invariably, many people promise themselves that they will start a new more calorie conscious diet. One of the secrets to a successful diet is to find foods that (a) you like, (b) taste good, (c) are low in calories and (d) are easy to prepare. It takes time and thought to fill all four categories.

One of the secrets to a successful diet (that I have found to be effective) is to eat at the Subway. There are three Subway fast food restaurants in our area. One is in Rockaway Park at 115-05 Beach Channel Drive, Exxon Station (718) 634-2914, another is in Far Rockaway at 233 Beach 20 Street (off Seagirt Boulevard) (718) 337-7240 and another at 87-04 Woodhaven Boulevard at the junction of Woodhaven and Jamaica Avenue, (718) 849-8246.

The Subway that I frequent is on Beach 115th Street and Beach Channel Drive. Their foods are low in fat and high in taste. Everything is very fresh. The prices are very reasonable. My favorite is the tuna fish salad.

According to individual specifications, the salad can include pickles, onions, peppers, tomatoes, black olives, green olives and lettuce. The fat
free Italian dressing is very good.

There are other salad dressings available. One of the strong selling points of a Subway diet is their brochure, which lists the (1) serving size, (2) calories and (3) the total and saturated fat content in each sandwich. The following seven sandwiches have
6 or fewer grams of fat: roast beef, ham, chicken breast, club, turkey breast, and turkey breast and ham and veggie delight.  They range in calories between 200 (veggie delight) and 311 (chicken breast).

One of the displays at the Subway depicts a young man who dropped 245 pounds in one year by eating two subs each day. He ate a veggie sub and a turkey sub and chips.

The service at the Subway takeout is excellent. Every person is cheerful and helpful. Each order is made to your own taste. It’s wonderful to find a quick and easy take out restaurant with a variety of foods that can satisfy everyone in your family.

One quick, easy and successful way to lose weight is to take out your breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Subway. It worked for me. I hope it works for you.

I'll see you during the New Year at the Subway!
