Obituaries Fallen WTC Hero "Father Mike" was born in Brooklyn and entered the Order of Franciscan Minor (Seminarian) on May 12, 1954. He was ordained a priest on February 25, 1961. Father Mychal was valiantly repeating the Act of Contrition with a dying firefighter on the morning of September 11, 2001, when he was struck and killed by falling debris from North Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Father Mike served mass at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church on West 31 Street in Manhattan. He is preceded in death by his cousin, Margaret "Peggy" Murphy of Rockaway Park. He is survived by his two sisters, who reside in Ocean City, Maryland. Fallen WTC Hero Henry Miller, Firefighter with the FDNY, Battalion 57, Ladder Company 105, of Massapequa, New York, formerly of Arverne and Rosedale, tragically gave his life in the line of duty in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Henry is survived by his wife, Diane (nee Freedman); his step-children, Scott Freedman and Melissa and John Landsbury; his parents, Henry (retired FDNY FF 308) and Beatrice Miller; his siblings Corrine and Bernie Warnock, Janice and Mike Testagrose, and Wayne and Lois Miller; his nephews, (FDNY FF Ladder 112) Jerry and Clare Warnock, Jonathan and Steven Miller, and his niece, Barbara and Brian Fay. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, October 1, 2001, 9:30 a.m., at St. Clare’s Roman Catholic Church, which is located at 137-35 Brookville Boulevard, in Rosedale, New York. Fallen WTC Hero John M. Moran, born in Rockaway Beach, was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Park who was killed in the line of duty, while attempting to save lives at the site of the World Trade Center attack. He worshipped at St. Francis De Sales Church. John was the Battalion Chief for the Special Operation Command Unit of the New York City Fire Department. He also was an attorney. He is preceded in death by his father, Walter F. Moran. John is survived by his mother, Margaret M. Moran; his wife, Kimberly Hyatt-Moran; his brother, Michael M. Moran; and two sisters, Ellen M. Brennan and Mona M. O’Connor. A Memorial Mass will be held on September 28, 11 a.m., at St. Francis De Sales Church. Fallen WTC Hero Kevin M. O’Rourke, born in Far Rockaway, was a resident of Hewlett who was killed on the morning of September 11, 2001 during the World Trade Center attack. He worshiped at St. Joachim Church in Cedarhurst, New York. He was a member of the FDNY Rescue #2 Unit. Kevin is survived by his wife, Maryann (Nee Jackson) O’Rourke; two children, Corinne and Jamie; his parents, Dennis and Hannah; and his sister, Patricia O’Keefe; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on September 28, 11 a.m., at St. Joachim Church. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Inc. will be held at Green-Field Cemetery. Walter O. Christianson Walter O. Christianson, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a 50-year resident of Rockaway Point. He passed away on September 21, 2001. Walter worshipped at St. Genevieve Church and was retired firefighter from the New York City Fire Department. He also was a retired employee of Pinkerton and Belmont and Aqueduct racetracks. He is survived by his wife, Doris Jewett Christianson; two stepdaughters, Carol Taphouse and Barbara Stamper; two stepsons, Bob Taphouse and Richard Stamper; two nieces, Dolores McGuinness and Karen George; a nephew, Bobby Bond; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Inc. was held at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Patricia Corey Patricia Corey, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a lifelong summer resident of Rockaway Point. She passed away on September 26, 2001. Patricia worshipped at St. Thomas More Church and worked as an administrator. She is survived by her husband, Harold; two sons, John and Stephen; a daughter, Tracy Pfromm; four sisters, Mary Ann, Barbara, Kathy and Noreen; and two grandchildren, Catherine and Patricia. Philip Leslie Holmes Philip Leslie Holmes, son of Ike and Reva Holmes, was born on August 25, 1961 at St. Joseph Hospital (now St. John’s Episcopal Hospital) in Far Rockaway. He passed away on September 15, 2001. He was baptized in Bethel A.M.E. Church, in Far Rockaway, by the late Reverend James F. Leath. Year later, he became a devoted member of the church. He received his formal education in the public schools of Far Rockaway. He was a graduate of Far Rockaway High School and Hunter College in New York. Philip was employed by the New York City Board of Education for twenty-two years. He later joined the Community Bible Church of Inwood, under the Pastorate of Pastor Dave. His desire was to one day become a minister. He is survived by his parents, Ike and Reva Holmes; a sister, LaVerne Harper; a brother, Izell Holmes; a nephew, Kenya Dale Capers Holmes; four aunts, three uncles, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home was held at All Saints Cemetery. Dorothy Kaminsky Dorothy Kaminsky, a resident of Neponsit for 31 years, died peacefully in her home on September 17, 2001. For many years she was very active in the West End Auxiliary of Peninsula Hospital and was a member of the West End Temple in Neponsit. She is preceded in death by her brother, Abraham Bart; a sister, Edith Shapiro; and her husband, Alexander, who died three weeks before she passed away. Dorothy and Alexander would have celebrated 64 years of marriage on October 10. She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Kaminsky; a daughter, Emily Cennamo; a daughter-in-law, Lee Kaminsky; a son-in-law, Vincent Cennamo; six grandchildren, Marjorie Sautner, Benjamin Grassini, Samuel Grassini, David Kaminsky, Greg Kaminsky and Rachel Starr; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsea Kaminsky and Holly and Molly Sautner. Interment was held at Old Montefiore Cemetery. Angela Malachi Angela Malachi was born May 2, 1947 in Raleigh, North Carolina to Mack Williams and Nicie Mae. She passed away on September 12, 2001 at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, in Far Rockaway, after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband, Handy Malachi; her mother, Nicie Mae Robbins; a son, Darryl Malachi; a daughter, Ruth Malachi; daughters-in-law, Kim Malachi and Doryan Baldwin; four grandchildren, Tiara, Rashan, Tyler and Tiana Malachi; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends. Interment was held at Silver Mount Cemetery, in Staten Island, New York. Wilbur Meredith Wilbur Meredith, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away on September 22, 2001. He was 86. He worked as a Weather Map Charter for the U.S. Weather Bureau and later as a Case Worker for the New York City Department of Social Services. He was also a veteran of the United States Army from the World War II period. Wilbur is survived by his sister, Rita Ryall, of Roy Reuther Senior Housing, and seven nieces. Interment under the direction of The Meserole Funeral Home Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery. Mary Neumann Mary Neumann was a lifelong resident of Far Rockaway who passed away on September 25, 2001. Mary was a retired garment worker for Dee Sportswear, and she was a member of the American Legion in Rockaway Beach. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William; two brothers, Joseph and William; and a host of nieces and nephews. Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel was held at Maple Grove Cemetery. Catherine T. Rudden Catherine T. Rudden, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a three year resident of Belle Harbor, coming from Hempstead, New York. She passed away on September 21, 2001. Catherine worshipped at St. Francis De Sales Church and worked as a secretary. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond and sister Agnes. She is survived by five sons, Kenneth, William, Donald, John and Peter; a daughter, Jane Prakope; two brothers, Jack and Bill; four sisters, Marge Tedeschi, Joan Roberts, Ann McClean and Maureen Sullivan; and 13 grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery. Margaret M. Tolan Margaret M. Tolan, born in Brooklyn, New York, was an 8-year resident of Rockaway Park. She passed away on September 21, 2001. Margaret worshipped at St. Francis De Sales Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Margaret Tolan; her brother, Matthew Tolan; and two sisters, Teresa King and Dorothy Tolan. She is survived by her two brothers, Thomas and Joseph Tolan; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Inc. was held at St. Johns Cemetery. |
