Dorothy Dunne

It’s Christmas morning as I write this and a beautiful crisp morning it is. I wish you all a very happy day and hope Santa brings you lots of hugs and kisses and an abundance of love. (I am sure most of you will get the material things you want, especially our precious children). So many of you are deeply saddened this season with the tremendous loss of loved ones from 9/11 and Belle Harbor tragedies and find it hard to face this gleeful holiday with much joy in your hearts. I deeply empathize with the young widows in particular because I, too, at a young age, lost my first husband on the battlefield. We were newly married and I know some of the women in Breezy Point are experiencing the same tragedy. There will be lonely years for you. Recovery takes a long time. In fact, you never really get over it. You simply adjust. However, be aware with time, also comes ease of pain and a strength you never knew before. My heart aches for you and if it is any comfort to you, put yourself in God’s hands.

He helped me through a great deal and I know he will help you as well. Good luck, good future and a much happier new year. May 2002 be a remarkable awakening year for you.

Remember, we are so fortunate to be American women and be able to enjoy the freedom we have. That doesn’t mean, though, we will not have struggles in life. We all have struggles and we must fight for what we believe to be right and just. I thank Beverly Baxter for her kind comments about what I have gone through in my life and the comparison I made to the plight of the Afghani women. It does my heart good to see them take off their Burkas, but it hurts me as well to see some too timid to shed them. Don’t stifle me, I shout. I must, we all must, do and say what we need to say. And, that is freedom. And that is what we are now fighting for, not only for our own nation, but also for the nations all over the world. As much as we hate killing and bombing we have to fight back. So, too, in our own little world. If there are women in our community who need help in escaping from an abusive situation, please do not hesitate to call me. You can always reach me somehow, either by e-mail, phone or the WAVE. I am at your disposal and will do whatever I can.

After mass this past Sunday, I met Kathy and George Pierce in Hannah’s. They were seated with well-known artist, Joan Doblin Vogel who used to be a resident of Breezy Point and has displayed her paintings at the Christ Community Church where I first met her. She is a delightful woman who is a member of the RAA and South Hills Art League. Andy Vogel, teacher and co-owner of Huggy Bears and bartender at the Blarney claims her as his mother. Andy has two other brothers, Evin, a bi-coastal (Ca. To Mass.) is a College Professor at Carnegie Melon. His other brother, Tim is a computer systems designer and all are very proud of MOM, who is a very talented artist. I saw a few of her paintings and especially liked two called Dawn which is dawn, as she sees it, from the Breezy Point beach on Jamaica Bay. Some of them are on display at the T Gallery at Fort Tilden. Go and see them.

Christine Buckley Strehle, (daughter of James Buckley, owner of Buckley’s in Brooklyn) was at Kennedy’s this past Sunday with her friends Audrey Donohugh, sister-in-law, Margaret Buckley and sister, Kathy Ann Buckley Murray who left (all tolled) nine children home with daddys, John Strehle and Jimmy Buckley to celebrate Christine’s birthday. Congratulations!

I wish to commend Geraldine Chapey for her contributions to Breezy Point in ways of Grants and senior trips. If there are any complaints or issues that need to be addressed I am sure she will try to help you.

Thinking of someplace different in the Rockaways try Pier 92, Dan Tubridy is back as owner and puts out a fine spread.
