Tips For Handling The Holidays

Tips For Handling The Holidays

"The holidays can intensify the grief of losing a loved one," says Mary Dever, a local grief counselor who has "walked the walk of pain and loss" herself recently.

Some of the rules, culled from Guideposts Magazine, are simple yet important, according to Dever.

Keep it simple. Don’t schedule too many events or over commit yourself. Do what’s best for your immediate family, some of whom may have their own ways of coping with loss.

Rest. The combination of holidays and grief can lead to exhaustion.

Break the tradition. Consider taking a vacation or planning a different menu or mealtime.

Accept help when it is offered. Remember to ask for help when you need it.

Don’t hold back. Tears are a natural part of grieving, no matter what the season.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to all those people who are grieving during this holiday season," Dever adds.
