JV Volleyball Spikes The Competition

Bishop Kearney’s junior varsity volleyball season got off to a great start, under the leadership of coaches Terry Purpura (Breezy Point) and Theresa Gannon, as well as Captains Marianne Montella (Rockaway Point) and Anne Hughes (Breezy Point), two of the five returning members. The other returning players were: Liz Jackson (Breezy Point), Christina Moran (Roxbury) and Ashley Savage (Breezy Point). Adding to the lineup was: Caitlin Nies, Michelle Thompson and Katie Purpura (Breezy Point). Also added to the team were sophomores Kaitlyn Stackpole, Krista Durney, Teresa Farrell, Parker Griffin and Vanessa Miro.

The season began with an early non-league match against powerhouse North Rockland High in Upper New York State. Kearney defeated them in three straight games. Building on that, the JV Tigers traveled to Archbishop Molloy for a non-league scrimmage tournament with Mary Louis, Molloy and Sacred Heart (NYC). The Tigers were again victorious as they defeated all of the other teams in the match-up.

After a week’s worth of some practice and no games because of the WTC tragedy, the JV banded together to being their season anew. On September 19, they defeated St. Agnes High School 15-5 and 15-6 in their first league match. They went on to defeat Archbishop Molloy, Stella Maris and St. Francis Prep. They traveled to St. Anthony’s in Huntington on September 28th and defeated the Friars 30-11 and 30-13.

The Tigers faced their toughest competition on September 29th when they traveled to Bedford, NY to participate in the Foxlane High School Invitational Tournament. It was a long and grueling day, starting with pool-play at 9 a.m. and finishing with volleyball at 6:30 p.m. But the long hours were worth it, because the JV Tigers captured the tournament championship, beating Smithtown High School in the final match 15-5, 8-15 and 15-7. The team was awarded a plaque for its accomplishment and each team member received a first place medal. Sophomores Ashley Savage and Marianne Montella were named to the all-tournament team. They also finished their regular season undefeated with a 16-0 record.

They went on to the Diocesan Championships at St. John’s University. After beating Archbishop Molloy and Mary Louis Academy, they became the first Kearney JV team to win the Brooklyn/Queens diocesan volleyball championship in many years. Go Tigers!!
