Girls Soccer Wins One For Rockaway

Girls Soccer Wins One For Rockaway

The girls from Saint Francis DeSales played a tough rival in Saint Francis of Assisi and beat them 4-0 to win the fall season soccer championship. This is a back-to-back championship win for this team.

DeSales took an early lead when Michelle Raaf blasted a shot past the goalie to scored the first goal of the game. On offense, Lindsay Corcoran, Annie Schneider, Christina Kalleta and Julia Steinberg passed the ball with great accuracy keeping the ball away from Assisi. Jena Hill and Cathrine Warren created trouble for Assisi in the middle by keeping their defense off balance.

Raaf struck again with a dead on penalty shot to make it 2-0. The third goal came when Ellen Cashin, with her fancy footwork passed the ball to Candice Clark, who faked out the defense for the third goal of the game.

The DeSales defense put up a wall that Assisi couldn’t get through. The solid play of Laura Lombardi, Allison Blutstein, Annie Blittner and Katelyn McFadden frustrated the Assisi offense by keeping them away from the net. Allison McManus was missed. Kelly Werner shut out the competition as goalie in the first half and Michelle Murray kept it going as goalie in the second half. Michelle stopped a penalty shot late in the game. Werner and Murray also played outstanding on the field. The final goal came when DeSales caught Assisi off guard as Michelle Raaf drilled home the final goal of the game to solidify the victory.

It was a great year for the girls, who are coached by Harry Werner and Ed Kalleta, who have been with the girls since third grade. Congratulations to all on a great victory!
