Continue To Volunteer

Continue To Volunteer

Dear Editor;

As I entered my polling site which is located at Carlton Manner, I travel back to an Election Day many years ago. When on Election Day many of us who believed in unpaid door-to-door voter pull out, rang doorbells, registered people to vote that had decided not to vote since 1968. The painful reality is that the importance to do voter registration drives and voter education is not a must do activity in our churches, civic associations, sororities and fraternities. The pain continues when I realized that there is a difference between working for the Board of Election and volunteering to empower a community with voter education at all times.

I remain proud to rank among the Fannie Lou Hamers, Goldie Maple, and all the Founding members of the Jessica L. Jackson Club of the Rockaways.

We must continue to volunteer to improve our failing schools and decaying communities, also assist our elected officials at the bargaining table for community resources.
