This past Tuesday, November 20, employees of the Far Rockaway Post Office conducted a special ceremony at the FDNY Firehouse at 257 Beach 116 Street, between Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Newport Avenue, in which they unveiled the "United We Stand" stamp and paid homage to those lost in the September 11 terrorist attacks. The employees will also raise money for local families in the community who lost loved ones in the recent crash of Flight 587.

The events have touched many who reside in the close-knit Rockaway community, and Postmaster George Buonocore was deeply affected when he lost a childhood friend in the WTC attack, who was a member of Ladder Company 3 and the Vice President of the Fireman’s Burn Unit. Ladder Company 3 lost 12 firemen on September 11, and money raised by postal employees, and the community, will also be donated to the Belle Harbor Relief Fund.

Some of the dignitaries who took part in the ceremony included State Senator Malcolm Smith, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, Postmaster George Buonocore, the USPS Triboro District Manager, Lilly L. Jung, and representatives from the New York City Fire Commissioner’s Office.
