The RDRC Community Update
By Curtis Archer, Executive Director
Let me say that I am very excited that the "WAVE" has granted Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) this opportunity to speak to the Rockaway community, both residents and businesses, about issues of importance. This column will appear on a bi-weekly basis and every two weeks you will be able to preview general and on-going information regarding the services that RDRC administers within and around the Rockaway Community.
For this first installment I have decided to look at our "Youth Employment Program". Before I begin, let me tell you a little about RDRC.
RDRC is a not-for-profit local development corporation, which was organized in 1978 by community residents and business leaders to develop a comprehensive Community Development Program for the Rockaways. The corporation’s overall mission is to promote the revitalization of the community’s economic base and neighborhoods, and assist its residents in obtaining an improved "quality of life".
Our Youth Education and Employment Programs has been serving the youth of the Rockaway Peninsula for more than nine years. RDRC has provided the Summer Youth Program and the School Year Youth Employment Program. Participants are assigned to internship sites that relate to their career interests and they receive stipends (year-round and summers); which provide the students with employability skills. All participants in RDRC’s Youth Employment Program attend a one-day weekly academic enhancement workshop to increase their competencies in reading and math. Career readiness instructions are provided to teach the students how to prepare a resume, how to complete a job application as they participate in job shadowing workshops, and lastly, how to interview. RDRCs’ case managers maintain monthly contact with the participants’ guidance counselors to maintain school linkages. RDRC also maintains active linkages with several organizations and businesses (such as St. John’s Hospital, Addabbo Family Health Center and the Sorrentino Recreation Center and the Lawrence Nursing Home) that provide internships for the youth. RDRC has and will continue to support the youth on the Rockaway Peninsula in obtaining the necessary skills and opportunities that promote educational achievement and the ability to become a productive citizen.
