Far Rock And B.C. Enter
The Playoff Dance
By Elio Velez
Good news for both Beach Channel and Far Rockaway as they both entered the PSAL playoffs. The PSAL playoffs hold 14 teams in a single elimination tournament. This weekend, Far Rock will travel to Wagner play in the first playoff game for the Seahorses in 4 years. Beach Channel will host a playoff game at Far Rock field and a raucous and rocking crowd should be expected.
Far Rockaway 29- John Adams 0
Far Rockaway (7-1) concluded the regular season with the hopes of winning and making the playoffs. The first aspect was accomplished as they blew out Adams (3-5) at Far Rock Field. For the Seahorses, it was the 5th time this year that the defense has shutout their opponents. Far Rock came out quickly with a 3-yard TD run by QB Aaron Pegues. In the second quarter there was a 50- yard pass from QB-Aaron Pegues to WR-Marlon Rodriguez to set up the following touchdown, which was a 5–yard run by Aaron Pegues. RB Rashid Peterson ran for 150 yards. That would be enough offense as the Far Rock D stifled any offensive moment that Adams tried to muster. Seahorses’ players Christo Howard, Aaron Pegues and James Washington had all had one interception.
The wait was on for Seahorses’ Coach Les Sabbah and his players. Far Rock had to wait for the Sunday results of other football games to find out their fate for the playoffs. Once Clinton lost to Columbus 12-9, Clinton was eliminated and Columbus entered the tournament. Far Rock was then assured of the 14th and last playoff spot. Due to an error by the PSAL, Far Rock was moved up to 13th place and passed Bayside in power points. Far Rock is the 13th of 14 seeds and will face Susan Wagner on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 12 pm at Wagner field. This will be the first meeting between Wagner and Far Rockaway this year.
Campus Magnet 25-
Beach Channel 0
Beach Channel ended their regular season on a down note as Campus Magnet blew them out. Magnet (6-2 ) was led by RB Martin Weir, who rushed for 147 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. The Magnet defense shut down the running attack of Beach Channel. Ian Odom who recorded 15 tackles and Carlos Cadet, who had 14 tackles, led Magnet. Magnet enters the PSAL playoffs as the 12th seed. They face off against Fort Hamilton, who is the 5th seed and will host the playoff game.
Though Beach Channel lost, they still wound up in the playoffs as the 8th seed. With the 8th seeding, Beach Channel will host a playoff game as they face off against 9th seeded Columbus at Far Rock Field. Columbus and Beach Channel had faced off earlier this year with B.C. defeating Columbus 11-0 on October 6. The playoff game will take place Saturday, November 10th at Far Rock field at 11 am.
