Weiner: ‘We Aimed High
And We Kicked Their Butt’

In a hotly contested, often acrimonious race, Joseph Addabbo, Jr. has been elected as the new councilman for the 32nd Councilmanic District, which covers most of the west end of Rockaway, Howard Beach and Ozone Park. While the results are still unofficial at press time, Addabbo, the Democratic candidate, won with 55 percent of the vote as opposed to 42 percent of the vote for Republican Joann Ariola, two percent of the vote for Independence Party hopeful John Baxter and one percent of the vote for Green Party candidate Robert Curran.

While Ariola polled well in such areas as Breezy Point and Broad Channel, Addabbo gained strength in the remainder of Rockaway and in his home districts on the mainland, polling 14,462 votes to Ariola’s 11,250. Baxter polled 400 votes while Curran polled 397.

Representative Anthony Weiner, speaking at Addabbo’s victory party in Howard Beach, told a cheering audience, "Our opponents aimed low, their newspapers told lots of lies and they pulled out every dirty trick in the book. We aimed high, and we kicked their butt."

Addabbo continued the theme when he spoke.

"We ran a positive campaign," he told his jubilant workers. "We refused to sink to our opponent’s level, refused to sink to the level of the newspaper that supporter her. That’s why we won this race."

"I feel great tonight," the candidate added. "It’s great to win, but now I have to get to work and make sure that we get done what needs to get done for Rockaway and for Howard Beach and for all the other communities that I represent."

"I will always be there for Rockaway," he pledged.
