Sanders: ‘I Was Blessed To
Win Every Election District ’
By Gary G. Toms

The winds of political change are blowing. The City Council will look dramatically different from previous years, as a crop of new and eager representatives are sworn into office in January. Among them will be James Sanders, Jr. of the 31st councilmanic district.

Sanders’ showing in the general election this past week was impressive to say the least. Although the official results are still pending as of press time, it is projected that he won with 86 percent of the vote.

"This was a vote against geography," said Sanders. "The people have voted against the notion that a person who lives in one area can’t understand the needs or concerns of those throughout the district, and this mandate proves it. I was blessed to win every election district."

The newly elected representative understands that he will be scrutinized from the moment he takes office, and notes that he is prepared to deal with whatever challenges he may face.

"I know there are people who are going to expect me to do everything right off the bat. What they need to understand is that it will take hard work and patience in order for me to do what needs to be done for the district. They elected me to this position, and I do not intend to let people down."

Sanders does not mince words when addressing the issue of how some of his opponents "played the game" leading up to the election.

"Although one or two of my opponents were running around claiming to be "real Democrats" and not revealing their true party affiliation, Abraham Lincoln’s truism that you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t full all of the people all of the time came true."

Sanders also takes his critics to task for certain remarks being made shortly after his victory.

"Instead of giving me a chance to prove what I will do for Rockaway, there are those that are attacking me right from the get go, and I’m not even in the council seat yet. They are so busy trying to poke holes and find fault, and it is really sad. What they need to do is join me in finding solutions to the problems that exist in our district, and we should focus on building the community. This is no time for negativity."
