Surprise! Surprise! There were tears in the eyes of Helene and Peter Danzilo. They really didn’t know till they looked around the room and found: their two daughters and sons -in-law, Lanie (Helene Jr. and Richard Schroeder and Maria and Richard Lehv, their other daughter, Christine is in Las Vegas, but shared the expense with her sisters; famous Earnie Barry on the key board playing their favorite songs; Peter's sister Barbara Genoese who celebrated her birthday that day; Bob and Arlene Hahner; Richie Ryan who will be operated on this week (prayers and good luck) and wife, Honey; Chris and Chris Reass; Don Ryan, publisher of the Rockaway Point News with his wife Margaret; Tom Connors and Your Columnist; Jean Brady, solo because hubby, Jim Brady was taken to Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn scheduled to be operated on for diverticulitis. (Say a few prayers for him) and many other friends all gathered for a Kennedy’s luncheon to wish Helene and Peter another 50 years of wedded bliss. The food was superior (prime rib, the best) and the entertainment outstanding with Earnie Barry at the keyboard and of course, the most delightful people. It was so nice to attend such a happy occasion in the midst of these past tragic months. (No wonder they were truly surprised…they won’t be wed fifty years till Jan. 5, 2002). They are blessed to have daughters who remember them so lovingly.

Shirley Hanrahan will be heading to Florida in two weeks and will spend Thanksgiving with a friend there.

Claire and John Hughes are in San Antonio and, I just heard…Tom August’s son is dead. So sorry to hear that, Tom. I did not know him, but such a great loss to you. Condolences to your wife and family.

Busy week in NYC. The American Magazine Conference was held at the Sheraton Towers and I sat with charming people, Harry Quadracci, President of Quad/Graphics well known in the magazine business and his family who are part of the business as well. And Suzanna Penn, Publisher of Girl Scouts. It was a heavenly meal of sea bass and the best of the evening featured the cast of Kiss me, Kate. Carolee Carmello has such a beautiful voice as she sang "So in Love" and "I Hate Men". Michael Martin, co-star did a great job as well. Jeanine LeMonna’s rendition of "Always True to You, Darling" was cute and catchy and Mishor Mulheren and Michael McCormack brought the house down with "Brush up your Shakespeare." A very entertaining evening, indeed. And, go see Kiss me Kate" if you get a chance. During the AMC sessions Oprah Winfrey gave a talk regarding the times and her new magazine, "O".

Brand Survival held conferences at the Marriott Marquis and Marc Globe, designer for Coca Cola, IBM, Victoria’s Secret, Ann Taylor, Saks, Sears, Reebok, Versace, Starbucks and Gillette…(quite an impressive list) launched his new book, "Emotional Branding" the new paradigm connecting brands to people. He gave a very interesting talk on how he develops brands. He likes to speak to the employees and get an insight into how they feel about their company. And when you design a brand it has to have an emotional impact on those who see it, so much so the design immediately brings that product to mind. Mac Globe certainly spells success. If you wish to know more about brand designs pick up his new book.

Microsoft’s new WINDOWS XP came into town in a big splash and flourish in Times Square. Bill Gates was his usual informal self as he explained the rudiment and positives of Windows XP. An Audiotape of Madonna was played for a mere 17 mill. Regis Philbin, (for a pretty penny) strode out on stage in his "Millionaire Suit" and asked Bill Gates, "Do you want to be a millionaire"? That drew a lot of laughs. Regis then proceeded to question Bill Gates on his Windows PX and he got all the answers right. I then went up to the Compaq exhibit where they unveiled their new PAQ Pocket PC Family featuring the best hand held technology in the industry. Very interesting.

The week couldn’t have ended better than to attend benefit held for the Glimmerglass Opera sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission to promote the best of Italy at an Evening of Italian Food, Wine and Song at the St. Regis Roof. Sooooo elegant with a food market to display the fresh fruits, vegetables and cheeses as well as the wines to match the food. I discovered a delicious reasonably priced champagne called Luna di Luna Sparkling. National Sales Director, Marvin Koch couldn’t wait to tell me it sells for only $7 to $9 a bottle. A good champagne for your next soiree. Michael Willis, Director of Public Relations introduced me to the Director of the Glimmerglass Opera. (Pix) Dinner, of course, was every bit of what you would expect at the St. Regis Roof. Superb, superb! Danielle Gardner was the Honorary Chair, Roberto Luongo was Co-Chair, Peter Duchin gave the Welcome; Earle Patiarco, baritone who has appeared at the New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera sang Rossini’s Ill Barbiere di Siviglia; Alexandria Coku, soprano Hendel’s Agrippina; Verdi’s Falstaff sung by Earl Patriarco. They also sang Mozart’s Don Giovanni. A beautiful evening.
