No, You Can’t Debate!

No, You Can’t Debate!

Dear Editor;

I was dismayed that neither John Baxter nor myself were invited to the Rockaway Beach Civic Association-sponsored debate for City Council candidates. The real losers here were the few attendees who were not already affiliated with either the Republican or Democratic candidate. They did not get to hear anything new, or provocative.

I participated in debates and forums in Richmond Hill, Beach Channel High School, Fort Totten, Howard Beach, and Breezy Point. It was odd to be neglected within one mile of my home. Frankly, I believe that both Mr. Baxter and myself would have made excellent additions, challenging the pre-fabricated answers and giving thought-provoking answers ourselves.

Several questions were raised about sewage being dumped in the bay and other environmental issues, I am the candidate endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. Mass transportation...I take the subways and buses everywhere I go.

I renew my challenge to all City Council candidates to take a pay cut from the $90,000 year part-time position. Now, more than ever, our city needs a full-time legislative body that represents the people. It's hard to represent the unemployed while making a profit and perks on their tax-dollars. I would have appreciated the opportunity to face my opponents and get the answers. But, I guess RBCA isn't interested.
